do 1 1/4" headset spacers work as cassette spacers for conversions?

...a bunch of spacers from in between cassette cogs. before shimano starting putting its cogs on spiders, the cogsets came with separate cogs with spacers in between each cog. any LBS should have a box full of worn out cogsets like this, with perfectly good spacers in between that they will likely give you. others use pieces of pipe, I dunno the diameter, but a bunch of thin spacers makes it oh so easy to finetune your chainline without having to hack off another piece of pipe slightly shorter/longer than the one you just tried that was not quite the right length.
