| HorSSe Ridge Ride Pic | GlowBoy Feb 2, 2003 10:47 PM | | Met up with TwoCircles Tim on Saturday for a great ride on Horse Ridge east of Bend. Turns out Tim's and my knowledge of Horse Ridge are completely different - he hadn't ridden the doubletrack stuff from the guidebook that I always ride, and I didn't know about the singletrack that he and a lot of the locals ride. Anyway, it was a nice sunny day with a couple inches of freshie here and there on the ground. Pretty smooth trail most of the way, with the occasional outcrop of pointy lava rocks to keep you awake. 3 of the 4 of us were on rigid singlespeeds. Jeezus, those TwoCircles bikes are light!
Hey Tim - I bailed on going out and doing the doubletrack afterwards anyway. I got up there and the temp had dropped to near freezing and the wind was really picking up. Just didn't feel like fun. Decent skiing up at Bachelor today, though.

| Looks like fun! | Sparty Feb 3, 2003 6:01 AM | | Wish I coulda joined ya, but my ride day was Sunday this weekend. I've ridden bikes with all three o' them peeps ya bumped into; they're part of a strong and fun ridin' group in Bend. Erica's a hammerette, she's done the Cream Puff (more than once?) and inspires me every time I get to enjoy the pleasure of her company on a ride.
The other two guys just kick butt in general!
See you next weekend bro,

| Cool! How long of a ride is that? | red-haze Feb 3, 2003 7:59 AM | | Haven't heard of Horse Ridge in Bend before. glad you were able to hook up with them.
I spent Saturday helping to cut in a couple of miles of new trail up at stella. got soaking wet and cold, but we made a fine new extention farther out. Lots of potential for playground in the surrounding forest. Fell off my Pokyman Log one more time.
see ya soon

| Depends on which loops you do | TwoCircles Tim Feb 3, 2003 8:47 AM | | If you do the singletrack loop that we did on Saturday it is about 1:45. You can then add the Dry Canyon loop that adds about an hour to 1:15. There are the doubletrack trails that Dan mentioned also - which I haven't ridden and don't know if I want to. A new peice of singletrack was being worked on this weekend by COTA members (Central Oregon Trails Alliance) that will make another hour or so loop when they are done.
Horse Ridge is 20 miles east of Bend on Highway 20 and is ridable December through late March. After that it becomes a sandbowl. If you can't hook up with one of us that rides it, stop by Hutch's Westside and ask for directions/maps. |
| the doubletrack ... | GlowBoy Feb 3, 2003 11:54 AM | | is a 12-20 mile loop, depending on exactly how you do it. Not the most technical riding, as you can see from some of the photos I posted a few weeks ago (scroll the page down past the first 5 pics) ...

I go nuts over the open desert scenery of rides like that, but it would be pretty boring to a lot of people. But then there's the singletrack on the North side and the descent down into Dry River Canyon. Nice to have such a variety of riding available this time of year.
But definitely only this time of year: the first time I visited Horse Ridge was in early September ... it was totally unrideable and I left wondering why in the heck anyone would ever ride there. Didn't go back there for a couple of years until I figured out that it's much better in winter.
Hey Bob, how's the mud situation at Stella right now? I'm looking forward to getting muddy this weekend.

| gonna have to do that hook up...sooon | red-haze Feb 3, 2003 8:52 PM | | hmmm...gotta look at my schedule for an emergency trip to bend. yeah, thats it. an emergency singletrack trip. soon.
MUD? Should be minimal, 'specially if the weather holds. SSue and I are heading up there early tomorrow morn after I get off work for some Stella Play. I have been extrememly lazy this weekend, must be fighting a cold or something. Hope I can keep up with everyone this weekend.
