| Weighing Options... Kelly or Pace FORK? | DONK (not BONK) Feb 3, 2003 8:09 AM | | I'm baffled. I can't think for myself anymore. I'm trying to decide between a Kelly Disc fork, or a Pace Disc fork. I've been quoted $230.00 plus shipping for the Pace and the Kelly is going for $180. Is the Pace worth almost another $100. Are there any other light weight (carbon, steel, ti) straight blade disc forks I should be looking at. I'd prefer sub $200. Then of course I could just save a mountain of cash and throw it towawrds CK SS disc hubs and buy a Kona P2. Yeah... that's what I'm thinking... that's for all of your mental support. peacey.... |
| You already know my decision... | Drevil Feb 3, 2003 8:27 AM | | ...I ended up with the Kelly disc fork because I've been riding a V-brake one since last May and I like the way it rides. I briefly thought about the Pace, but the cost was more than I wanted to spend right now, and I didn't even know when I could get one (because of availability in the U.S.) Plus, I had no idea how it would ride.
I did my first ride on the disc fork yesterday, and it was nice! |
| Where'd you get it? nm | Fast Eddy Feb 3, 2003 2:07 PM | | |
| re: Weighing Options... Kelly or Pace FORK? | kam Feb 3, 2003 10:55 AM | | i really can't say if the pace is worth the $50 more than the kelly fork, i have never ridin' a kelly. i can say that prior to buying my pace fork i had never ridden one,so i kinda went out on a ledge when i wanted to buy one (the closest i came to riding rigid before the pace was then i had a mars super with lock-out!!!). anyways...i do love my pace, it tracks nicely and atcually feels like there is about 10-15mm worth of tavel down there, it's amazingly smooth. it's also really light, i can easy pick up the fork end of the bike and just point the wheel right where i want to on technical stuff. i am kinda scared on really rough stuff since the fork is make of carbon, but it's never given me any reason to worry too hard. i also thought of the on-one ti fork (about $350) but the price was abit too high and there weren't alot of opinions on it(when compared to the pace). there were a couple of rc31 in the classifieds, did someone snap those up??? overall, ythe pace is a very forgiving fork. i actually bought a duke race for when i want 80mm of travel, but i may sell it or slap it on my geared fs rig, that i'll probably never ride once my peyto gets in!
cheers. |
| alternatives | weather Feb 3, 2003 12:53 PM | | vicious forks (webcyclery)
on-one forks
spicer cycles forks--looks pretty nice with oval legs
tetcycles forks
and surly guys just told me they will be putting up their new forks very soon. i'd wait for that.
ps. i don't think kelly is light at all... |
| ..Anyone have pics of Chester forks??... please? | DONK Feb 3, 2003 4:59 PM | | Just wanted to take a look at some Chesty forks. There are no pics on his website, and I'd rather not bother him. THANKS! |
| Matt doesn't make forks | The Rev. Patrick Feb 3, 2003 5:12 PM | | Or, at least he didn't. He'll design your frame around a specific fork or supply you with a Kinesis aluminum fork (maybe others, too). I think the info is on his website. Check it out. I'm sure that doesn't count as bothering him.
Peace,
Patrick |
| I've been smoking crack... | Donk Feb 3, 2003 5:43 PM | | I knew he didn't make forks, what was I thinking... I was trying to refer to Teesdale forks. I'm slipping. Not enough sleep, too much school, too much work and too many mtb builders/brands running through my mind...grr... |
| here's mine. warning: pretty large picture | weather Feb 3, 2003 8:07 PM | | canti only. but he can do disc for about $10 more. |
| i got two problems w/ this fork (both solved).... | weather Feb 3, 2003 8:23 PM | | first: canti stud was, somehow, not threaded. LBS has to cut threads in there.
2nd: split crown race from FSA orbit xtreme can fit onto the fork, but once fit, the fork-race assembly cannot get into the lower cup. in other words the lip where crown race sits is a bit too thick. filed off a little bit and it now fits fine.
but...being the cheepo that i am, i really expected a $160 rigid fork to come w/o problems. |
| crap the photo won't show. i've been smoking crack too. | weather Feb 3, 2003 8:25 PM | | here you go. |
| Is that a TET FORK? | DONK Feb 3, 2003 9:18 PM | | Looks nice. But I want one without canti/v brake studs, just disc. you know super clean. I wonder if TET makes disc only forks. thanks. |
| it's tet. and yes tom will do disc only for 10$ more i think. nm | weather Feb 3, 2003 9:43 PM | | nm |
| Priorities... | Drevil Feb 4, 2003 6:52 AM | | ...mine were a comfy, predictable ride, and to be able to put a fat tire in there. Since I already owned a Kelly (canti) fork, I knew what it would feel like. Also, I knew that a WTB Weirwolf 2.5 tire would fit, and that there is still plenty of room for clearance.
When I considered a new fork, I thought about the Pace and the Vicious.
I, and seemingly others on this continent, had problems getting the Pace over from England. I didn't want to wait indefinitely for them either. Plus, they are more than double the price that I got for the new Kelly fork. Finally, I had no idea how they rode, but one guy on here complained that they were a little flexy, and he was looking for a different fork.
About the Vicious, I called Carl (Vicious Cycles founder/prez), and asked him about the clearances. He said the max tire width that he would recommend would be a 2.3. He also said a Weirwolf may fit, but he wouldn't guarantee it. I also asked Kevin from Webcyclery, and he said no problem (with the Weirwolf)...but since Carl said so, I opted not to get it.
I have ridden a Surly fork on my bike, and I didn't like the ride as much as my Kelly. I also tried a P2. Same conclusion as the Surly.
Anyways, to each, his own. |
| Oops! The flexy comment... | Drevil Feb 4, 2003 7:05 AM | | ...was meant for the Vicious fork, not the Pace. I can't seem to find his post, but it was within the last two months. If anyone else knows what I'm talking about, please provide us with a link.
And I'm not sure that he even said it was flex he was commenting about, or clearance (for fat tires). I know I'm waffling, but he did comment about the Vicious, and he did say he was looking for a different fork.
Anyways my opinion: Kelly good, Surly & P2 not as good, Pace & Vicious unknown and more expensive. |
| More options? IndyFab? Sycip? Too many options! | DONK Feb 4, 2003 7:37 AM | | I think I'll either go with TET or hook up with Kelly. The thing about Kelly that I like is that they are just across the Bay from me. A whole hell of a lot closer than TET. But I know that shouldn't be a deciding factor. Sycip is real dang close too, anyone know or want to comment on their forks? What about IF's forks? Input needed. thanks. |
| in that case | weather Feb 4, 2003 9:16 AM | | i recommend kelly. it took me quite some energy to get my tet fork (i'm only 1 hour away from tetcycles!) |
| Kelly disc fork detail | Drevil Feb 5, 2003 11:57 AM | | Welp, here 'tis. Another neato thing about this fork is the forward opening direction of the dropouts. It makes it easier to put the wheel in because the rotor goes into the brake better than if you were going through the back. Also, it helps negate the wheel ejection issue. FYI, it's a Conti Vertical Pro 2.3 mounted to a Mavic 317 rim. Toodles! |
