| Why SSing hurts so good! | bikeguy100k Mar 29, 2003 11:56 AM | | I did a ride today with a small herd of folks at Tape Worm in Renton, WA. I was the only SS. I've not been on the bike for a couple of weeks due to a new job and some family related issues.
I recently got my Retrotec and have enjoyed it immensely on the couple of rides I've done. It gets all the right attention and the "Holy crap! That's a SingleSpeed?" My reply is always: "Yup, one is all you need!"
Anyway, back to my story. The weather was great and the trails were in great shape. Many of the riding companions let me take the lead because I go faster than the gearies and full-boingers due to the fact that a SS requires more momentum. I was doing pretty well on the first portion of the ride, but could tell that my fitness (or lack thereof) was going to be a factor later in the ride when the climbs started. Talk about foreshadowing!
My lungs basically seized a few times really good. Geez! A SS will make you faster, fitter, and torture you if you aren't in shape! I loved/hated it! It's made me more motivated to get my lard butt in shape so I can make those geared full-boingers suffer!
Gawd, I love riding my SS. It is as much a macho thing as it is a simplification of the riding experience. I love passing the gearies on the climbs (when I'm not sucking wind and wishing I'd maintained a degree of fitness).
SINGLESPEED: IT'S NOT A TREND, SO SHUT UP AND RIDE! |
| single speeds smell good | ernesto Mar 29, 2003 4:04 PM | | I did a group ride yesterday...I was on the Bontrager single speed...it's so nice having one gear and ppl don't get it. And today, another ride which consisted of me on the Bonti, two girls on mountain bikes, and another on a road bike...I rode the SS to be fair, but still had to slow it down so they could catch up to me. I have it set up as 42t 18t. it's all good for road. Can't wait to take it in the Kettle trails in Wisconsin in a few weeks. Then I'll use 32:18. It smells good. |

| re: Why SSing hurts so good! | Bobby Mar 29, 2003 7:58 PM | | Single speeds are for people who like to have an excuse. At about every mountain bike race I enter, there is a loser on a SS. They always have the same excuse as to why there getting ready to get smoked. "I'm on a single speed." Knowing good and well they have a bike at home with 27 gears on it. That's fine with me though if ya'll just want to give your money away, just means more for me. By the way, I've never had a single speeder pass me and never will. Just keep breathing those gearies dust, but I'll warn you it's probably not good for your lungs. Buncha losers. |

| Yawn, nice try Boobby... | Gotcho' Numba Mar 30, 2003 1:37 PM | | ...everyone knows why you have never been passed by an SSer, you need to actually be riding for that to happen.
I'm betting you're a Southern Fried poser with a Beginner Class big mouth. |
| Yawn, nice try Boobby... | bobby Mar 31, 2003 5:31 PM | | Poser? Sounds like you need to be on a skateboard rather than a sissy single speed. |
| Sorry, but it's the other way around... | Fritz Mar 30, 2003 2:34 PM | | I went SS because I got sick of getting dropped by everyone riding SS. Now that I'm riding SS, I'm still getting dropped (though not as bad). At least now I can't use my gearie as an excuse :~) |
