NON-rigid for users(12 posts)

NON-rigid for usersHardtailAgain

What fork are you using? Going back to hardtail (for SS) and wondering what everone uses. 80mm OK? Also, how are you setting it up? I would think a bit "stiffer" than what I am used to on my FS.
I run a Fox Vanilla 125RL on my SS, but...Spar†¡cus

...your bike's geometry will probably dictate how much travel you want to employ.

I weigh 195 lbs. and run the medium spring. It's such a great fork; I love it. I lock it out on long, sustained climbs, but most of the time I let 'er move. 5" of front travel is not too much for a hardtail.

I run a Manitou Black Elite 80/100. When I first built up my Inbred, I was using the 100mm setting. But, I have since switched to the 80mm setting and like it a lot more. It is definately stiffer but the stiffness compliments the frame well. It is much more responsive in the 80mm setting. Some of this is probably due to the steeper head angle but in general it just feels more connected. I hope this helps.
Duke SL 100mmZiggy Stardust

I put a RS Duke SL 100 mm (4 inches) on my previously full rigid bone jarring DISS (aluminum) and I couldn't be happier. Nice and rigid and with the 2.4 mutanoraptors, it's like a cadillac now. I know some think this makes them feel disconnected from the trail, but a nice juicey trail fork like the Duke (not a SID SL or some other spaghetti fork) is really comfy, less fatiguing, plus I ride faster. I don't notice any loss of pedaling efficiency even without a lockout. I like the 100 mm travel because the bike is more stable downhills, has tons of lush travel and the bottom bracket sits a little higher making log hopping alot easier (less chainring snags).
Go with a Fox fork...either Float or TALAS. (nm)Zonic Man

Psylo race.....seattletim

I dig my Psylo. You can nearly lock it out for climbing, and it is very supple over the kind of riding up here, i.e. roots, logs, whatnot.

Even though my Curtlo was designed for an 80 mm fork, the longer (125mm) travel Rock Shox doesn't seem to alter the handling.

Good luck!

2nd the Fox 125 RL but in 80mmstriker

I took the advice of many on this board and got the Fox RL in 80mm. I am very happy with it on my SS. I wanted a problem free fork with good feel and this is it. Lock out is nice.
i just bought a vanilla rlc...kam

Can you switch between 125mm and 80mm with that fork, or is it just 125 and 100?

can be set at either 80, 100 or 125mm of travel by moving the spacers around (it is clearly stated in the manual). i think it's the float forks that have either 80 or 100mm of travel...can someone correct me if i'm wrong?
Ridiculight is greatstriker

It was down for a while because my RF BB exploded. I put a Truvativ Gigapipe in it and rode it this weekend. I'm really starting to jive with her and figure out how she handles. She climbs great, even better than my Superlight. If I didn't peter out on some of the steep tech climbs, I would be a superhero. I now ride my SS on any trail in my area without trepidation.

It seems to be flexy when i front brake it--like the wheel wants to tuck under the downtube!I can see it going ZERO mph just rocking the bike back & forth w/ the front disk brake on! I guess all singlecrowns are gonna do that somewhat?? ...............................Maybe I need a rigid/ disk /tall fork-with my 2.3" Tioga dh tire!!!
