Comments on such a challenge? Gearing? Would you do it again? What trails?

Thanks,

I run 36/16 and ride my SS almost exclusively. I didn't take it to Pisgah. I have a 20t granny on my NRS and walked my bike plenty. If you go SS you better be a world class rider, do tamer trails than I did or love walking your bike (you'll be doing plenty of that anyways)

BTW If your rigid up front....better have a big fat tire for sure.

.........that I rode with several of my states top ranked Pro-elite guys and while I didn't pay attention to where we went...you can bet it was the toughest inclines and declines that Pisgah has to offer.

I would have been sqrewed and tatooed on my ss.....but it was a hammer-fest not a joy ride.

Ouch!
It should be said I typically ride by my self and don't mind stopping to let the old ticker get below 175.
A hammer fest with top riders is no way to start SSing the Smokies, but if you pick your rides (and riding pard'ners) it can be a joy.
Some days Gears are better, but count me out of that mountain hammer train Gears of no, sounds like my petticoat might get caught in the spokes:)

I agree. There are times when I love to hammer and it is usually alone on my local trails. But, riding my SS in the mountains isn't one of those times. The views are awesome and riding my SS forces me to take the time to enjoy the view. My riding partner prefers a slower pace which works great with the SS. We would both be interested in a group ride somewhere in Pisgah. This weekend is out but otherwise things look good. No ego's, no agenda's just enjoying the ride with others who can appreciate people of all abilities. Drop me a line if you decide to put something together.

Ops!! ERROR POLICE...I Run 34/16 not 36/16...I figure I better correct myself or the knuckleheads I run with will correct me for sure ;-)
Yup, Pisgah & Dupont are fun on 32/1842IT

Until my wife got sick I was riding Pisgah (Davidson) and Dupont regularly on my rigid BuSS. I run a 32/18 and am NOT great shape.
If you are local to the area give me a shout, of you are planning a trip give me a shout also, I might be able to point you to some fun SS stuff, or possibly even get away for a ride.
The nice thing about Pisgah and Dupont is the views are so scenic for a stroll while waiting for your heart rate to get below cardiac levels:)
Sorry about the lame pic link but that's a Rigid Buss on Ceder Rock @ Dupont

I rode my Inbred at Kitsuma about two months ago. I was running a 32:16 which was a bit much but not bad really. I was able to climb almost everything because most of the steepest stuff is comprised of switchbacks. The most difficult portion was actually riding old Hwy 70. 2:1 was a little tall for seated pedaling. I have since purchased an 18 for the other side of my Surly Flip/Flop hub. I am anxious to try the 32:18 gearing. 32:18 would have been perfect for this section. On the otherhand, 32:18 would have had me spinning out on the ride out to Andrews Geyser.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. Frankly, my Fuel sits idle most of the time now. I love singlespeeding and for me, it is all I really need. BUT, it is not for everyone. I know people who have tried it and just don't like it. The most important thing is to ride; geared, single, it just doesn't matter. For me I prefer SS.

If you are considering going SS, build up an old bike with a tensioner and spacers on your freehub. This is what I did before going to a SS specific frame. Or, borrow a friends SS for a few rides. Give it some time before making a decision.

If you want a riding partner, drop me an e-mail. I live in Mooresville and my friend (who rides geared)& I love to ride the mountains here in NC.
I've ridden PNF geared but not SSstriker

and since I am riding my SS more and more, I was thinking of taking it to the mecca of east cost single track. I've ridden Kitsuma and you are DA MAN if you climbed the 12 switch backs on an SS.

I just picked up a 22t and it's got me thinking I could hang in the big stuff.

I'm from Raleigh and try to get to PNF at least twice a year.

I'm like one of three single speeders in Raleigh.

Striker,

I rode MOST of Kitsuma, emphasis on most. I also fell over on a couple of switchbacks because I lost momentum and was too weak to make the next pedal stroke over roots. Of course, once you make the turn, it isn't so bad. I also ran out of steam on the last climb (saddle) before you drop down the backside. With a 32:18, I think it is mostly rideable on the SS. The ride up old 70 was really the most difficult because I was in between gears. 16 was a little much for seated pedaling (it's a long road). It was still a blast and I didn't hold up my geared riding partner. I haven't met any SS'er's here in the Charlotte area but I am sure that they exist. Most people have no idea that I am riding a SS on the local trails and I don't ever say anything.

Never been, but I'm anxious to go. If something got set up I'd definitely try to fit it in.
You'd go right by my house Columbia SC man42IT

On your way up I26 you could drop by the house and pick up those Special-Ed tech manuals.
Depending on your riding type (non hammer) I could be interested in a bit of guiding, I am in Flat Rock NC and like non-hammer laugh fest type of rides, technical stuff is cool , egos should be checked at the door, and smoking the flowers and sipping the hops are fine by me within reason(though I no longer participate my self).

The MIL may be in town in a few weeks, so I just might be able to scare up a weekend off. I smell the beginnings of A Plan.
Okay, this is starting to sound like a ride42IT

I'm game for a ride.
I live in Hendersonville NC @20 Min away from Dupont (nice rides if you know where to find them) and 30 from PNF Davidson district (Brevard).
I have been off the bike for several months dealing with my wife's cancer, but if you guys let me cheat and ride my Geary (unless I get back into shape) I would love to do a bit of riding.
I am self employed (barely) so week days are fine with me.
My SS gear of choice is 32/18 and I am no hero, so it should be fine for the rest of you mortals.
As for pace, I won't mind waiting, as long as you don't :)
