| Rims | Zak May 27, 2003 6:34 AM | | Well, since I need new SS wheels so soon, I am going to buy a custom set instead of trying to hastily build a set myself. What rims do you guys reccommend?? I had the 517's, just wore theough the sidewall, 2.5 seasons. I was looking at the Bontrager Mustangs and the Sun 0 Deg XC's. These are for SS application only and as you can see, I want rims or normal width. I use Rhinos on my Freeride SS. Which of the three (517's, Mustangs, 0 Deg xc's) would you highly experienced SSers get?? or do you have any other sugestions. Like my last post said, these will be for racing, so weight is of some concern, but I will gladly sacrifice some weight for some extra strength, I am 6'2" and 205, this is why I am wondering if I should switch rims from the 517. They are the only rims I have ever really tried, had good luck with them, want a longer lasting sidewall. Any suggections???? Opinions??
Once again, thanks in advance!!!

| Um...get urself some 517 discs... no more sidewall destruction! | Padre May 27, 2003 7:50 AM | | No really.. i find my discs much simpler than my v's to own and operate. I'm still searching for a wheel burly enough too.. but try the disc option. I'm of the opinion that the disc is more ss style than v's....true.... they are newer and more technologically advanced... but really.. more simple and less damaging to the rim... |
| Do not use 517s with discs! | shiggy May 27, 2003 8:17 AM | | Especially a big rider. The spoke bed is not strong enough to take the added stress of the discs and will crack around the eyelets. |
| Discs not an option... | Zak May 27, 2003 9:17 AM | | My 1x1 frame is the old style without disc brake mounts. Any other willing to give an opinion?

| re: Rims | jh_on_the_cape May 27, 2003 9:58 AM | | As a wheelbuilder once told me, 'If 517's worked for you before, then why not stick with them?'. Honestly, 2.5 years on a lightweight rim is a pretty long life. And if you get another 517, you can do a 'rim transplant', and reuse the spokes and do it yourself, saving mucho $. Just get new spoke nips if you want. Tape the rims side by side, and just be sure to line up the valve hole. Then swap the spokes over one by one. I have done this with success...
I have WTB speedmaster rims on my SS and they work well. 517 on the other bike. |
| re: Rims | shinewheel May 27, 2003 10:18 AM | | I am liking the Mustangs I have built with Paul hubs, they've stay true without adjustment. I am using the front specific for both front and rear, OK as the rear is undished. I was impressed at the rigidity of the unbuilt rim; they have a three-box section that I guess contributes to this. I also like the width of the sidewall braking surface which allows for more gear changes without repositioning brake pads. Weight is less important to me as the tire differences will eclipse any differences in rim weight. My micrometer fingers are suspicious of the thickness of the sidewall so if you're more concerned with wear life you might compare that to the others. |
| re: Rims | Chequama Mama May 27, 2003 10:41 AM | | I've used both mustangs, and 0 degs. Liked them both. Like another poster mentioned. I'm not real sure on how thick the walls are on the mustangs, but I didn't actually measure. the high sidewalls are nice. At your weight, the mustangs might be a touch more durable? I only weigh 140, so I can't say much in that department.
They're both nice, I think a well built wheel on either rim will be pretty much the same.

| Mavic F519 | ren-man May 27, 2003 11:41 AM | | I recently switched from 517's to the F519 rim. I am 6'1'' and 170 lbs. I didnt like the flex of the 517, especially while cranking up hill on the front wheel. The 519 is slightly heavier(advertised as 460g vice 395g for the 517). But the increased stability and solid feel on climbs and decents is worth it. Plus with about 2.5mm more rim width, I get a little more rubber on the trail.
I think they're great for my SS. Hope that helps or it just made the decision harder.

| Howsabout some ceramics? | DancingBear May 27, 2003 12:51 PM | | If you're looking for a longer wearing sidewall, go with ceramic 517s. As an added bonus, you'll get better braking in wet conditions. Just remember to get brake pads to match. |
