Shocking Secrets of SoCal singlespeeders revealed!!!! [o]Hollywood

b THERE AREN'T ANY!
(Caution: bumpy, smart-ass road ahead)

Here's a spy photo of terminaut's custom XTR chain tensioner -

also known as a FREAKIN' DERAILLEUR!!!

So I head down to see some friends in Newport Beach over the weekend and decide to call up Terminaut and see if there's a ride happening. It's a 100 mile drive for me, so I want bang for my buck. There's a group of ss'ers getting together Monday at Aliso Woods, so I'm stoked! Pack up the SS and gear and I'm off. I find out in advance though that due to term's injured wrist, he'll be riding the "mantle" bike (see pic - gearie Seven Duo).

"Well ok" I think, "at least Timan and some other ss'ers will be there."

Timan pulls into the parking lot. Can't wait to see that nice ti IF singlespeed!

"Huh, that's funny – that looks like a geared, full suspension Klein Palomino".

Then I meet another rider joining us.

"Jeff – this is Bob. He rides a ss, but today he's on his geared FS bike too".

The other riders gather around the huddle, and I find myself swimming in a sea of XTR derailleurs! I lose count of how many cogs I see.

b WTF??!!!

i head......spinning, vision.....blurry, must......sit.....down....

Is this some sick joke? Is Ashton Kutcher going to walk out of the brush, informing me I'd just been "Punk'd"?

We head out for the trails and once I got used to all the clink-clunk-clinnnnnnk sounds of these gearie's bikes, I had a great ride ;-)

(note to self: DO NOT attempt to follow term down the technical trails, injured or otherwise)

Thanks again guys for a fun tour of your backyard. Next time bring the real bikes though, would ya?

But I never thought it would be that bad :^)

Sounds like you guys had a good time. Everyone (except me) got sick at my place on Monday. Oh, it was grand fun. What's the plan this weekend?

Never heard of you...terminaut

I believe you're making all this up. Even the Photoshop-ed picture is lousy. Come on, a Duo on the back of a cheapo Saturn?!!!... This would be more realistic. A bad-arsed singlespeed cyclocross pampered in the passenger seat in a vehicle that can get me to the trailhead on time! ;-)

You're gonna have to do better with these made up adventures of yours.

Nice job representin'! I will definitely be SS'ing for the upcoming gathering, probably on the you-know-what new frame.

The Klein was the closest to the door.I was going to grab a SS but(excuse list to follow):

IF Ti-too tough of a gear for Monday morning
IF steel-no pedals
Airborne Tihag-flat tire
Chester-too easy of a gear
Seven Ti-partially disassembled
Moots Ti-slick tires
Fat Chance-don't ride green bikes on week days
Colnago-still haven't gotten it together
etc,etc,etc...

Good to see you Hollywood,
I'll definately have the SS for Gab!
tell me about it...Hollywood

I had the same dilemma;

my Klein SS was in the car, as I
i thought
I was going to meet ss'ers!
Cannondale Jekyll - has gears
Ti Merlin - not mine, would get arrested
Custom Vanilla SS - ok, I don't have one.
Seven trike - too wide for singletrack
Ti Bontrager custom SS - in a magazine, can't really ride it.

so yeah, decisions, decisions... :D

See ya at the Gath! (and Fred?)
