hub dilemma(3 posts)

hub dilemmaBig Bird

I'm getting a Paul Word disc rear hub for my new Karate Monkey, but I'm not sure whether the Paul Word front hub is worth the extra money over, say, a Shimano Deore disc hub. Any opinions on this one?

Thanks,
Big Bird

A dedicated SS hub will make up a stronger wheel than a cassette hub because there is no dish on the drive side. Have you considered a cassette style SS hub like the King or On-One? With the Paul, you will still have to deal with freewheels, of course, now that someone actually makes a good freewheel, White Ind, that isn't really an issue except maybe cost.

Worth it? Depends on your overall goals for the bike. If you are seeking a matching wheelset, then it might be worth it to you. IMO a front hub is a simple beast. It has a couple of cartridge bearings. Other than that it is all in flange diameters and offsets and all those boil down to is spoke length. I usually go searching online through the best deal closeouts first. Then I go with what is the best deal.
