Gearing choice for ss commuting(4 posts)

Gearing choice for ss commutingseanf

I have a ss bike I built up with slicks for commuting to work. I am currently running 44x18. I was curious to see what other people are using . The gearing seems pretty close to what I want but I thought I still could go for a little more difficult gearing

With slicks I got tired enough of spinning out 44:16 that I went to gears for commuting. On the gearie, I would have been able to get away with just 44:11, :13 and :15.

My next commuter will be a 700c fixed-gear and probably 48:15 or so.

All flat as a pancake, except for an overpass or two.

Yes I do have some fairly steep hills one that is 1 mile but nothing too bad.
That's a pretty good gearGlowBoy

I use 42x16 for most of my commuting, and can get up moderately steep hills with it if they're short. For hillier terrain, or winter commuting when I have a lot of headwinds, I use 42x18. That one will spin out a bit easier than I'd like on the flats in more favorable conditions, but not too badly.

Your 44x18 is in between those two gears, though closer to the 42x18. If it's flat and you don't run into too many headwinds, you might be able to step it a notch taller.
