| 700c wheelset | hitekrdnk Sep 22, 2003 7:10 AM | | First decide what your needs are. For a stout build, go with a 36h pattern and a rim like the Mavic T520, Salsa Delgado etc. (more info on these available at the 29 forum). Need Disc? Freewheel or cassette? That will help decide your hub config. Built wheels from Bontrager are readily available and also the Mavic Speedcity wheelsets are coming around cheap and they are pretty reliable to boot. Mean Todd at Webcyclery is doing some good builds and will do it to your needs first try. I have scored several sets of built wheels online for very reasonable deals. Good Luck! |
| Nashbar | club Sep 22, 2003 7:47 AM | | no I don't work for them but they do seem to have the good deals lately.
in the latest catalog they have a bunch of 700C wheelsets for cheap, like $50 a pair give or take. Some with 130mm road hub spacing, but some with 135mm rear hub spacing as well. The pair they call "hybrid" wheels with 36 spokes and burly rims looks ideal for a 29er.
Uh, you do know that "29ers" use the exact same rim diameter as road bikes -- 700C/622mm bead seat diameter, right? Only the huge tires make them "29ers" -- a measure of the tire's diameter at the tread. The wheels are the same as road bike wheels, only some of the superlight road wheels probably wouldn't last too long in the dirt. |

| Any bike shop in the US... | 2melow Sep 22, 2003 9:29 AM | | QBP carries a SS version w/ surly hubs/Salsa Delgado rims, and they also have a geared XT disk hub/Delgado rim wheel available.
Pretty much every bike shop in the country has a QBP catalog in the service area (or the bathroom.)
Custom? Speedgoat and Webcyclery can build them. |
