| Redline Monocog vs. KHS Solo One | dan d Sep 22, 2003 9:12 PM | | I am a college student looking to getting into single speeding. I would like to keep the cost down, but I don't want a total peice of crap either. I was wondering if any of you have ridden the Redline Monocogs or KHS Solo-One. What are your reactions to these bikes. Are there any other bikes I should look into?
Thanks all

| re: Redline Monocog vs. KHS Solo One | the Inbred Sep 22, 2003 9:20 PM | | i say KHS. mainly, and i might get flamed for saying this, because i see it as being a 'real' mtb. correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the Redline more of a cruiser? and the 110 spacing in the rear...er...
my vote is KHS. |
| re: Redline Monocog | TimT Sep 23, 2003 4:05 AM | | The Redline is way more MTB than cruizer. Just look at the angles. The 110 spacing has more to do with their BMX back ground than anything. I have a Mono Cog and I can tell you that It rides as good or better than some custom bikes I had. And I have test rode a KHS and was not very impressed.

| re: Redline Monocog vs. KHS Solo One | Scoutdog Sep 23, 2003 4:20 AM | | I bought a KHS for my wife off ebay, brand new for 350.00! It rides nice but it is a cheep bike. The chain ring can not be changed and the stock gear sucks. So you will probably have to get a new crankset.
The tire clearance is poor in back, the hubs are cheep and low quality, the suspension has no dampening so it acts like a big tire not a shock. But like I said it rides nice.
I have heard that the Redline rides good too, but I heard that it is heavy. I think you should shop for a deal on a Surly 1x1 if you end up spending 100-200 extra $ its money well spent. |
| re: Redline Monocog vs. KHS Solo One | TryAndStopMe Sep 23, 2003 4:31 AM | | i'd have to agree with scoutdog on the surly. also, you get to build it up yourself (huge plus in my book), and you can shop around for great deals on new/used components on the MTB classifieds and Ebay and your LBS. |
| I have a MonoCog frame | Bikehigh Sep 23, 2003 5:35 AM | | and think it's terrific. The Surly may be a good way to go if you already have a bike, but it could take you a couple months to build up. With the MonoCog, you'll have an actual bike to ride, that's a real SS mountainbike, right now, plus it's less expensive. One or two hundred dollars is a lot of pizza and beer! |
| I got hooked on SSing on a Monocog | Fett Sep 23, 2003 6:14 AM | | It is a great bike for the money. The geometry is solid and the bike is built to last. It will take abuse without putting a bunch of money into it. The downside is that it is a little heavy, but any bike in this price range is going to be. If you move move up a little bit in price range the Bianchi DISS is a great bike for the money as well. I went from the Monocog to a DISS to a Cannondale converted HT to a Merlin Extra Fat. You will be addicted. |
| Me too | Giantxc Sep 23, 2003 7:20 PM | | But overtime I found the geometry and weight not to my liking and upgraded the frame to a Haro. Its a bit slacker than I like, but I cleared rock gardens I had a tough time with on my steeper geary.
In addition, the 110 spacing is a non-issue. You can build anything from a cheap wheel to a bling bling Chris King for it. You just need to buy the hub at a shop that carries high end BMX stuff
If you like a racy feeling bike that is very nimble and what "whippy" the Cog isn't the best bike out there. If you like a bike that is more stable and inspires confidence in pretty much any situation, you'll love the Cog.
Was wishing I kept my for urban assualts earlier today! |

| re: Redline Monocog vs. KHS Solo One | juniordonkey Sep 23, 2003 8:23 AM | | It is listed over in classifieds, I am asking 325 for it, with a lot of upgrades, basically everything. But, I am pretty flexible and open to changing things out for you. It is about two months old, almost new. Let me know, I really want to sell this thing to make room for the new monkey! |
| re: Redline Monocog vs. KHS Solo One | SWISS Sep 23, 2003 8:29 AM | | Get the Redline. It is a "real" mountain bike, despite the BMX rear spacing. I ran a Sun Superstock rear hub (110 spacing) and it worked great. The monocog is well-built and will take a lot of punishment. I haven't heard anything good about the Solo one. I'd recommend the Redline to anyone wanting to get into SS'ing who doesn't want to spend a lot of $$$$. |
| oh geeze... | the Inbred Sep 23, 2003 10:12 AM | | that was not the bike i was thinking about. my bad.
though, i still don't really dig the 110 spacing. |
| I've got a KHS Solo-One... | DobeMan Sep 24, 2003 6:38 AM | | ...and I love the thing! What a hoot to ride and it gives the MonoCog a run for the money for the cheapest complete SS you can buy. I would have looked closer at the Redline but it doesn't fit me.
Overall I am very happy with the bike. There are a couple of sore spots on it that have been touched on with the main one being the crankset - if you want anything other than a 38t up front you must replace the whole crankset. The other weakness being the rear tire clearance, nothing bigger than a 2.1 will work. Overall though, what do you expect for a limited interest product for the price? I've got over 200km now on mine and no worries whatsoever and no adjustments needed. Yes, the components are low end stuff, but I'll just replace them as they wear out, just like any other bike.
Cheers!
