Is there any reason I shouldn't buy a Surly 1x1 ?(12 posts)

Is there any reason I shouldn't buy a Surly 1x1 ?MellowCat

The time is near for me to ride a "real" Singlespeed. I love my ENO hub and all, but its going on a beater for full time fixed riding. So...looking to order a frame and rear wheel, have the rest laying around.

I was serious about a SPOT, and still really like their product, but I'm just not sure its worth double the price to ride a SPOT over a 1x1. The SPOT numbers fit me alittle better, on the 1x1 I'm not sure which to get, the 20 or 22? I ride a 21" now. I need a long seat tube and shorter toptube(6', 35.5" inseam). My only issue going with the 20" frame is the really small Headtube. My current 21" frame has a 6.5" headtube and I still need some spacers with my 2" riser and 5deg stem, this is the only reason I was thinking 22 with its 6.3" headtube.

So, the big question before I got rambling... Is there any reason I shouldn't buy the Surly? I know it weighs a pound or so more than a Spot, but what else?

Thanks,

MC

The Karate Monkey :-)

Surly's rock...and they are inexpensive

Get one...or two...you love 'em

I agree that the Karate Monkey would be a great choice. 29ers run he bars higher than their 26" counterparts and you'd get the benefits of having one of the most versatile frames around.

To "guess-timate" your size on your current ride, I'd measure from a level surface to the center of your bar and go from there. That way you can compare your actual fit to what's listed on the Surly website.

Hope that helps!
where is the Surly frames welded/made? nminterloper

since no one convinced me not to get a Surly....she's on order! I decided to do the 20" frame (black/Disc)and deal with spacers/25deg stem and such. I think the 20 will feel alittle more nimble on my favorite local twisty as hell ride.

Thanks for the comments on the KM as well. I know the KM would fix my bar height issues, but the handling is still somewhat suspect on my local trails. If I rode out west I would do the KM in a heart beat, but around these parts a fast handling bike is the ticket.

Look for some pics in a week or so!

Yeah. My Jamis can be ready for ya. Its a 21" Dragon, or you could do the Surly. The Dragon has a mega big head tube, I think you like that kind of setup?
