| Cheap A$$ Spacers | sslug Nov 13, 2003 9:36 PM | | Well, I was converting another freehub wheel tonight and was looking in the parts area for leftover spacers. Found a 5" piece of pvc sitting there and slipped it over the freehub and Voila! it fit. Measured it off, cut it in the miter box and a few seconds later had a SS spacer, custom cut.
Turns out this was leftover from a J-pipe I put on a sink a month ago. 1-1/4 O.D. pvc has 1-1/8" I.D.
Heh, this cheap A$$ piece of plastic is holding a King cog along with some alloy spacers. |

| No pics but... | pushbike Nov 14, 2003 7:38 AM | | thanks to home depot here's a diagram.
Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible for anyone cutting up their drain pipes for a cheap a$$ spacer.
webcyclery, excelsports, lbs have inexpensive spacers. bikeman has blue ones. spot has come out with a set. boone might have ti ones? does campy have red ones? srp(?) has colored ones. dead cassettes have 'em, etc |
| I don't understand.... | xrmattaz Nov 14, 2003 4:54 PM | | When I converted the Stumpy a coupla years ago, just bought some nice silver and blue aluminium spacers from my friendly LBS...what..like 10 bucks? Alternated the colors and never looked back.
No cutting or measuring involved, and it looks cool!
Is ten bucks TOO much for spacers?? |
| Only you can answer that for yourself. | Brandon Nov 15, 2003 3:18 PM | | But for me.. Yes 10 bucks is too much for something I can get for free. |
| I did that too! Works great, eh? | GirchyGirchy Nov 16, 2003 3:31 PM | | I hadn't seen that before when I tried it. I'd bought the PVC trying to make a crown race setting tool, but ended up using the longer piece as a digeridoo. The shorter 1' long portion sat until I did a conversion, and happened to think of it.
It fit perfectly...so I measured and cut, and it's good to go. Chainline's perfect too.
A tip - I put some black vinyl around it so it doesn't look so shitty. Blends in much better. And I agree...$10 is a ripoff for spacers.
