UNIT or Explosif, which one?(15 posts)

UNIT or Explosif, which one?veelz

OK guys, I have the cash to re-enter the ss clan. I have the deposit down at the LBS for a Kona frame, one of those with the sliding dropouts. I can't say enough about the LBS, but I have a problem, I told them I would take either the Unit or the Explosif, whichever was available first (no three month wait), but both of the frames are available. I like the singleness of the unit, but I like the versitility of the explosif so I can gear it up for a weekend trip for the girlfriend. Help, I will make up my own mind, but I was wondering what you wonderful folks would do.

I'd go with the Explosif and build a ENO rear wheel for quick conversion to SS when the need strikes.
get the Explosif...ringlord

especially if you already have a wheelset (cassette type). pick up a singlator or my fav the soulcraft convert and your set. with the explosiv converted you will have no hassle disc brake set up (if you wish) and as you said, a versatile rig for adding gears (hiss).

I run a converted cove handjob and love it.
good luck

I'd go with the explosif. In previous years the unit and explosif were advertised as using the same tubing (true temper platinum?) but the unit only had those tubes for the front 3 and cheaper/heavier tubing for the stays. The explosif was the high end tubing throughout. I am not sure about if it is the same with the 2004 frames, but resale will be quicker with the explosif either way.
Since they both have the sliding dropouts, gpsser

I would go with the explosif. From what I remember it has a slightly nicer tube-set. Is there a difference in price for the frames? You could also order a spare Unit drop out for the drive side to have that clean look while SS'ing.
nice, i didn't realize they have sliding dropouts (nm)ringlord

Nicer tubeset. And like you said, option to run gears. You can get the hangerless slider for the dropout for the explosif, for looks. But on the unit, there are no places to run cables for gears.
And please let us know how it rides. I am really considering getting one of those for next year... list is $450. that's a deal and a half.
I'm going with the ExplosifMine'sAPint

I'm pretty sure the Explosif comes with the sliding rear dropouts - at least the picture on the Kona site shows them. I'm going to go ride some Kona hardtails this weekend with the intention of putting an order in for an Explosif. Make sure you post pictures when you get your's built up!
re: UNIT or Explosif - same frame for '04itsdoable

The '04 catalog list the Exposive & Unit as the same frame (except cable stops), the Unit is available as a comple SS bike, while the Exposive is the frame only, excpet in the UK where it comes as a compete gearie too.

Cheers,

Tom

I would get the explosif. You've got the option to run gears (why not?) plus I like the color better but that's personal preference.

I'd be getting an explosif myself if I hadn't made the fiscally IRResponsible decsion to order an I.F. !!!

Nice! IF!! What color? Did you go with an EBB and hanger? Or horiz ends and the welded on hanger?
Hey, $450 vs ~$1450... If you keep it 3x as long as you would have kept the kona, you are responsible.
thanks for the responsesveelz

Well, boys and girls, thanks for the banter. I was leaning for the explosif because I like the color better and the option for gears if necessary. I'll call up the LBS and order that one, shouldn't take long. I will post like a good little lurker with photos and ride report for those interested.

Have a great SS tweekend all
