| Behold!...[o] | eelpie Jan 13, 2004 7:30 AM | | A fixie is born. Some pix of my CrossCheck that I finished building last night. 2001 Gnome-Puke Green frame, purchased as NOS off ebay. Set up as a 44x16. All I can say is, do NOT buy Problem Solvers alloy chain ring bolts--stripped 2 before the nuts even tightened up enough to spin and when I finally got 4 in, the "test ride" resulted in a couple of snapping sounds and a big ring dangling from the bottom bracket shell, LOL! Some Sugino steel bolts/nuts I had the foresight to purchase earlier quickly put things right.
First real ride tonight.
Specs, for those who care:
- LX cranks
- Eggbeater pedals
- Shimano BB
- King Dreadset HS
- Nitto moustache bars
- KORE Elite stem
- Shimano 105 aero brake lever
- Avid Shorty 6 canti
- Alex Adventurer rims (front and rear)
- SunRace JuJu front hub
- Surly NEW rear hub (not a fixed hub)
- Surly track cog
- Surly Constrictor post clamp
- Oval M600 seatpost
- Selle Italia Trans Am Flite Ti saddle
- Cuissi Elite bottle cage
Obligatory "Leaning Against the Car" shot...
Another angle...
Dead on (and blurry)...

| nice build | creepy Jan 13, 2004 9:08 AM | | are you using a bb retainer ring to keep the fixed cog in place if its not a fixed hub? great looking bike, sort of makes me want to fix my CC. where did you find the nittos, everywhere Ive looked is out of stock? |
| Using an old Shitmano BB lock ring... | eelpie Jan 13, 2004 9:40 AM | | $1.50; from the Performance mech's miscelleny bin. As for the bars, got 'em months ago at Rivendell when they had the 25.4 (MTB) clamp diameter. Looks like Rivendell has only the 26 (Road) diameter ones now, but Harris Cyclery seems to have the MTB ones, if I'm reading this correctly:

Definately try a fixed gear. I've only been riding one a couple months (started with a 42x16), but I love it more every time I ride it. Brakeless track stands at lights are sweet when you can rock forward and backward to maintain balance. Plus, however far you ride, you have the satisfaction (and improved fitness) of knowing that you've pedalled every square inch of the way.
Funny thing is, when I recently rode my SS MTB after a few consecutive rides on the fixie, I had a hard time persuading myself that it was okay to coast! |
| Cheaper here... | eelpie Jan 13, 2004 9:42 AM | | this is the place I was thinking of and they claim to have both clamp sizes:

Good luck. |
| Big thanks to AZBound and... | eelpie Jan 13, 2004 9:52 AM | | pauly and others for their help/suggestions/offers for my cable hanger problem. Needed a saddle so I ordered one of the Problem Solvers noodle hanger things and the brake seems to work quite well. |
| Oops, 2002, FWIW. nm | eelpie Jan 13, 2004 10:24 AM | | no mechs! |
| 2001/2 | creepy Jan 13, 2004 11:00 AM | | how can you tell the difference? mines a 2k1, looks the same. |

| Cable Hanger-Noodle link please... | ss-nyc Jan 13, 2004 3:31 PM | | Nice build.
I recently got a bean green NOS off ebay myself and am putting together parts to build it. Would you mind posting the link the cable hanger-noodle since I am sure going to need it.
Thanks! |

I don't know why I am becoming obsessed with cable hangers at this point in my life but I do wish I had a green Cross Czech. |
| Yep... | iconoclaSSt Jan 14, 2004 7:34 AM | | that's the one all right. Worked like a charm. Thanks again bro.

| Do you want my brand new 52cm Bean Green cross check frame? | ss-nyc Jan 14, 2004 1:41 PM | | I bought it on eBay and it went directly to storage. The wife almost killed me when yet another frame arrived. I was thinking of selling it on eBay in the spring since I doubt I will ever have time to ride it even if I build it. I currently just have too many bikes.
Let me know.

| hmmm | AZBound Jan 14, 2004 7:29 PM | | 52 cm, eh? If I wasn't 6'3" tall and if I didn't already have a 59 cm Kona Jake the Snake, I'd probabaly want to know more. Good luck liquidating the personal overstock. My wife also would have killed me, except that it would be for not buying her a new frame, too. |
