i can do pretty high wheelie drops to flat just fine. the thing is sometimes i land a little hard. i saw some trials films and they land way smooth. i know you must use your legs and stuff. also do you guys tap your brakes when you land to get the front end down or what?

The pedal-kick drop off is the smoothest technique.
You've got much more control over where and how you land, of course you have to learn the pedal kick first..

How to pedal kick drop: roll until you're at the edge of your obstacle, do a first pedal kick to get your rear wheel on the edge of the obstacle, then do another kick to drop(some people hop a little on their rear wheel before dropping to have even more control).

How to land: This is contreversial, some say that you have to land as much as you can on the rear wheel and kind-of couter the hit by leaning as much as you can to the back to absorb the drop(don't ever do this while wheelie dropping or you bike will flip over!!) with your rear brake completely locked, this is the technique that I use and it works perfectly for me. Other people say it's smoother to land the back wheel just slightly before the front one and absorb everything with the whole body(I find it harder than the other technique)

You just shouldn't land with both wheel touching the ground at the same time, it way too hard on the body and the bike and you will look bad(like 90% of the urban guys on double suspended bikes by the way..)

Check out the videos at http://www.trialskings.com it'll give you a better idea
