Stock vs. Mod for a beginner (please help!)Allmjm

Hello every one, I have recently started trying to learn trials type riding and love it. I have been considering buying a bike and have been going back and forth between a Mod and Stock bike. I started off trying to learn trials on my a little bit to big, 30lb mountain bike, with a 4 inch fork and with really bad headtube angles. On this bike I was having a little trouble moving the bike around but learn how to turn 90 degrees on the front wheel and could side hop just a little bit. I then decided to try my uncle's old BMX bike since it has much smaller wheels and frame and I have been doing pretty good on it so far. The first thing I learned to do was do a 90 degree bunny hop. I recently (in the last day or 2) have been able to side hop up and off small things/drops and do 1 lurch from a stand still (but I can't do it with a pedal kick since the BMX bikes gearing is so big) and can rock back on my back wheel (with my front in the air) and bunny hop back wards. OK so now about the different bikes I have been looking at. I just wanted you to see where I have been coming from....I was thinking that a Mod bike might be good since I have been having much better luck throwing around the little BMX but since I can't drive and I have to bike to the places I want to ride I was thinking a Stock bike might be good too if it is a small frame. Plus most of my type of riding will be doing is trials/urban (drops and tricks). What do you guys think? The Mod bike I have been looking at is a Monty 219 X Alp Magura Modified Trial for $425 at Webcyclery does this seem good? Thanks for all of you help and really sorry for making this so long.

If you can't drive to your riding spots, what good is a mod bike going to be??

In terms of maneuverability and such, a mod would be easier, as you surmised from riding a BMX, but at the same time stock frames are usually about 12" in size, which is still way smaller than your 'little bit too big' bike.

You can ignite an Enormous debate over stocks vs. mod. Ride a mod, and people might think you're riding a BMX, or other trialsers might call you a 'cheat'...whatever. They're cool bikes. A lot of people tend to categorize mod as more of a competition bike and stock as more popular as an urban/tricks bike. If you are worried about strength, you can probably buy a stronger stock that mod.

I don't have experience myself, but I've heard the XAlp is no good - cheap frame

As long as you are still a beginner I would advise you to go with a stock bike.
Just imagine that alot of people stop trials after a few month because they do not have enough patience.
You can use your stock bike then for riding street/dirt or other stuff with minor modifications.
With a mod bike you better walk if distances between two spots are more than 100 m. I guess that is the main reason for mod bikes beeing seen as competition bikes than for urban trials.
Besides from that a mod is alot of fun.
But with a small frame you can learn fast even on a 26" bike.
