| Nose-Manual Backwards?? | Surboard921 Dec 20, 2001 12:34 PM | | We've all seen Ryan Leech do that move in "Search for the holey trail" or Eddie Tongue in "Kranked 3". I've been trying do do that move for awhile with no results.. I can't find how the hell they get to roll backwards, getting the rear wheel up is easy cause it's a bit like a endo, but how do they roll????? Anybody knows?? |
| re: Nose-Manual Backwards?? | CoLIn_TriAlsRiDeR Dec 20, 2001 1:02 PM | | Well dude,
first off you need a decent incline so that when you pop up on your front tire you can roll back down the incline....they usually don't just do it on the flat although there's a way of doing it on flat ground....but that involves rolling backwards on ur bike then popping up the back....alot harder.
Anyways, when you find this incline, practice. Just like manuals, you have to find the sweet spot, and all of those who can do manuals now know that it takes a while to get a feel for it. Now, Ryan Leech and Eddie Tongue've been riding for a good 7 or 8 years (at least) and i'm sure they've found the time to really get a 'feel' for that move. Give urself some time man. I can do it the odd time, and it feels cool too....I just have to figure out how they do it so smoothly and slowly (i need a disc or something with extremely good front wheel modulation, which i will hopefully get some time ealy next season!) I remember asking Ryan Leech about that one at a demo we did, and he said that you gotta "find the sweet spot, practice lots and" went on to say that "a disc helps alot because of the excellent modulation".
Hope this helps somewhat.

| re: Nose-Manual Backwards?? | Regder Dec 20, 2001 9:30 PM | | I've seen a few riders pull this off. For one thing it would probably help if you had a solid front wheel hop (i.e. know the balance point on the front).
Here's the technique that I have noticed. Roll onto an incline, do an endo with a few front hops to get in the right position. Release the front brake and roll back, modulating with the brake and your body.
There is also one where you roll forward, lock the front brake and swing the back around 180 degrees. And do the reverse nose manual from there. |
| Its called a "G-turn" | OrBust Dec 20, 2001 10:00 PM | | Yeah...the forward roll to rear end swing around 180 is a g turn. |
| Its called a "G-turn" | Regder Dec 20, 2001 10:10 PM | | is it really? I have heard so many moves labeled g-turn that the word has lost all meaning, it's the same with jap zap. Probably all of the common trials moves has been labeled jap zap at some point in time, my personal guess is that it means a touch hop, whether that's true or not we may never know... :) |
| I have the OLD ass freestyle book... | OrBust Dec 21, 2001 1:19 AM | | My buddy gave me this old ass book, from back in the day when freestly was popular..and the movie RAD was in full swing(Youve seen RAD right?) it was callled "freestyle moves part 1", if you have been a consistent reader of BMX plus you know what IM talking about. They have alot of old school freestly moves, and its called a G-turn. Im only 22, but I like to take stuff back to the 'roots' and call stuff original names. Like a bunnyhop for instance....alot of people now call them 'broncos' or 'j hops'....but look at any old school BMX mag, and they have been called bunnyhops for 20 years. Craziest name for bunnyhop I have ever heard..."total unload". I found a web sight a while ago, and they actually had a 'how to' G-turn/front wheel backwards manual section...Ill try to find it. Later man... |
| holy G | ~ScaryFast~ Dec 21, 2001 1:58 PM | | To toss in another take on the G turn, I agree with Regder, but with a further specificity:
If I read Regder's description right, you basically pivot the rear 180, then start rolling backwards.
To me what defines the G turn part of this is that you release the brake AS you are pivoting, thus your front wheel already starts to roll. As you turn, the front wheel carves out a G shape.
And to OrBust, I totally have to agree with 'bunnyhop'...I can't stand "J-hop"...or other pseudonyms. I'm about the same age, but I really can't say I know the roots, since I didn't ride BMX or anything when I was younger. 'Ratchet'? No thanks, I pedal kick.
Oh yeah, I would just like to add that in relation to the original post here about the reverse nose manual, I am most impressed with the following method: Rather than starting the manual from a standstill, start rolling backwards for a bit, THEN lean way forward into the nose manual. A guy does it in Dennis Goj's 'Visions teaser' clip.
Phew. |
| Your right... | OrBust Dec 21, 2001 3:46 PM | | Yeah man, I think your right about the Gturn thing. But it gets kind of confusing. A 'real' Gturn, like the my post above with the videos, you actually are turning the entire time you on the front wheel going backwards, you almost do a full 360. But the variation is when instead of turning when going backwards you just go straight and into a front wheel manual.....so is it still called a Gturn?? The turn part was there, but turning on the front wheel when manualing wasnt. Either way, it looks really cool.
Dont even get me started on how many 'lectures' I get from punk 12 year olds...they are like "dood, a bunnyhop is when both tires leave the ground at the same time, its not 1985 anymore".....they just dont understand. I try to explain how back in the day it was called a bunnyhop, and it will always be called a bunnyhop. Then Im like, "whos your favorite rider"...of course they love all the top freestlyers, miron/hoffman/etc.....and I tell them to go ask anyone of the pros, since they worship them, and the pros are all going to call it a bunnyhop...."no way dood, trust us they will say Jhop"....whateva! |
| "A guy does it in..." | Optikal Dec 21, 2001 5:00 PM | | That "guy" in none other than Mr. Ryan Leech himself.
I think.
22 days until warm sunshine. |
| that guy | ~ScaryFast~ Dec 22, 2001 2:27 PM | | That was Ryan Leech in the teaser? I wasn't sure, cuz he wasn't given any credit..plus I thought there was some other dude in there riding with Norco Team clothing.
I was just watching Ride Guide the other evening, and thinking how shameful it was that Ryan Leech has to demonstrate his stuff on a Norco dualie just to promote the company's 'cool' bikes, when it would be so much more proper on a trials bike. Meh, that's where the money comes in I guess. |
