next upgrade?(5 posts)

next upgrade?jackhoe1

Here's a pic of a bike I acquired after looking at postings on the forum for a couple of weeks. It's a DS2 w/ LX brakes in the front and Arch Rivals in the back, Mammoth rims, Tioga DH tires, and a huge Z-5 fork. My question is what to do for the next upgrade?...Change the fork to a rigid?
thanx

Right now that bike looks like a full on urban assault rig- not too trialsy! But it can be worked on- especially in the weight department! A rigid fork would be a blessing and if you are considering this I am to assume you are a little bit serious about riding trials and less about jumping off stairs (which is fun, don't get me wrong!). In this case I would consider dumping the monstrously heavy mammoth in the front- you don't need it for trials. Also a front tiogo DH is a bit much- a lightweight 2.1 or 2.0" tire will do nicely and it will make that front end easier to get up on the rear wheel. Speaking of which- what kind of hub does that bad boy come with? Shimanos have horrible engagement points but if you're not to that point where you do lots of rear wheel moves it can be changed much later. How do your brakes work? The old saying "if it aint broke, dont fix it" holds here. If they feel good enough for you, don't worry about them. As you get better and you demand more from your bike a front disc would certainly make you happy and maybe some Plaz crm pads for that rear vee brake. For right now that should be all- the only musts being lighten up that front end! If you need more stuff to do get a teenie bashring (no middle ring- sorry if you already have that, I can't see the picture very well in 16 colors hehe) a nice rear hub laced to a ryno light or something a bit wider (mammoths are really heavy!), road cassette, short cage der.....new frame :P Very good bike for starters and you be able to ride it for quite a while- have fun with her!
I don't think you should change anythingOptikal

You have a very nice urban assult bike there. Don't change it.

If you're serious about trials, then get a trials bike. No matter how many componant changes you make, you're still left with a DS specific frame (long chainstays).

Try and find something like a Norco Evolve to get you started in trials. While you are able to do pedalkicks, sidehops and everything on that bike, the Evolove (or any trials specific bike) will allow you to do much more.

Like ya'll said, the bike is a blast on steps, jumps, etc. in the urban environment. When I purchased it, I didn't realize that other companies made trials-specific bikes in the same price range as the Azonic. I'm going to follow the suggestion of keeping it as is, and start to save up for a starter trials-specific such as the Evolve. In the meantime, I'll indulge in all the stairways Philadelphia has to offer. thanks for the input

I think you should keep your bike the way it is and save your money for broken parts (trials breaks a lot parts ecspecialy drivetrain items)
