Hope hubs(6 posts)

Hope hubsTommot

after christmas i have about £100 to spend on a new back wheel.
ppl u must advise me.
i have: D521 (32h) on shimano LX hub. while i am aware that these arent the best hubs for trials, it only skips occasionally at the moment.
the rim is pretty true (i can straighten wheels to a certain degree of accuracy), so should i bother getting a new rim?

i can get a HOPE XC or MONO (which one should i get) for about £80 + £20 rebuilding onto my existing rim.
OR...
an all new wheel (hope XC + D521) for about £115
OR...
a BULB hub for £120 (last years model (i hear they are better, the new ones skip apparently)) + £20 rebuilding.
i think the bulb & new rim is way out of my budget (about £160)
or i can buy a 2nd hand old bulb (3months use) for £100 with D521, but i cant inspect the wheel.
thanks for your help.
Tom

why not keep your current setup seeing as it really isn't causing you any grief and spend the money on another aspect of your bike that is possible more deserving, or just save it till you really need to get a new part

no, im definitely gonna go for the wheel, cos i know the hub is gonna go soonish, and when it does i wont have the money to get it.
I think ive narrowed it down to either XC, BULB or MONO, built onto my existing rim.
I dont think i can get a new bulb (too expensive), and ive heard a lot of reports of the new ones skipping anyway.
so the question really is:
Is the bulb worth £40 more than the XC

Tommot

PS are xcs and monos exactly the same, bar the disc mount?
PPS ive heard that hope are bringing out a new hub... anyone know anything about this?

you are asking the wrong person here. Hope hubs really don't get much exposure around these parts and I don't know much about them.

What I can tell you is that the xc and mono is pretty much the same hub from what I can find, don't know about any new hubs though coming from them.

yeh, mono and Xc are very similar - disc mount is the main difference. Just a few grams too.
I aint heard anything about a new hope hub...
Id probably say stick with the XC or Mono. The bulb isnt worth it really. I used a Sport (old XC) at the weekend instead of my King, and it felt great. Ive heard of a lot of people blowing the freehubs up on bulbs too. Not too much of a problem - hope replace it for free with a stronger one, but its tim eoff the bike isnt it?
Hope this helps

The word I keep getting from the HOPE distributor here in Canada is this:

They're basically all the same hub, the Mono, XC and Bulb...

The XC has the added disc mounts over the mono, and the bulb has a Ti cassette body over the XC's steel. You can get a steel cassette body for the Bulb, but then you've got an XC at a higher price...

So, go for an XC.....the old sport hub..
