| Singlespeed Trials Gearing... | KrazyKona Dec 27, 2001 12:27 PM | | I'm planning on running a 22T front ring with an 18T or a 20T freewheel in back. I have a flip-flop hub, and I was wondering if running a 14T freewheel on the other side would give me a gear high enough to get around. Any other ideas on how to make this work, please tell me. Thanx! |

Unless you intend on slowly riding around of course, additionaly I don't see the hassle of taking your wheel off and switching it around really worthwhile for such a small difference. |

(better than taking your wheel off!) the tensioner will pick up the slack when you are in the smaller ring. maybe you could run a 22 and a 32 up front. i don't know if it will keep the tension high enough for trials, though. |

| Right... | KrazyKona Dec 28, 2001 12:47 PM | | I have a Kona Kaboom SS (the black 2001 model) which is the one I want to convert to a trials-capable bike. Its also my commuter at the moment, so... I dunno. I'll experiment, and find out what works. |

Apart from the fact that you still have some kind of deralleur to smash on sidehops you have a stronger rearwheel which will stay true a longer time.
Plus if you smash your deralleur it most times will still work as a chain tensioner. I have mine fixed to the chainstay and also fixed by the limiting screws. When smashing it in the past most times it will have bend or the tensioning screw (for the cable) will broke. But the chain tensioning isn't affected at all no matter if I look at my smashed LX or my smashed SORA.
Plus a shimano or ACS freewheel is damn CHEAP and it has 4 claws (the acs has 5 I think) and is much more reliable than most freehubs are. Since not everyone can spend enough money to afford a chris king chances are to get hurt from snapping low quality freehubs. Then you might be hurt badly or at least have to buy a new freehub which will cost alot more than a freewheel. And you have to lace your rearwheel again which is either timeconsuming or expensive.
Good reasons for me to ride a two chainring/singlespeed hub setup.
Plus no cables, no shifters, just breakslevers on the bars, and so on....
just my two cents |
