DX v-brakes ?? or SD7?? LX levers ??(8 posts)

DX v-brakes ?? or SD7?? LX levers ??grandma
Jan 1, 2002 1:15 PM
Which is the best way to go?
My magura cables rip out of the brakes every now and then from bar spins like when throwing the bike away dirt jumping or from xups and stuff. I like the hs33 for trials but this gets annoying. Since I do both on the same bike I need some advice.
So I am thinking about either:
1. getting steel housing for the mags. I read they are more flexible than the normal cables.
2. getting DX vees which are damn cheap but ugly red. They are from 98 and I did not find alot about them. Since Jeff Lenosky rides them on the rear they cannot be that bad. But he is riding another lever I think. I read from a guy who is very satisfied with rear wheel lock up. He rides them with LX levers.
3. Get the avid sd7 which are far more expensive. Also here I read from a few people who run them with LX levers.
Are the DX good?? Are the DX levers different from LX so I should get the LX levers additionaly?? Or should I go for the sd7 and if so with sd7 levers or LX ones???
How about running them with full housing (because of dirt entering)??
What brake pads? the sd7 standard ones seem just fine from what I heard. But for the DX???

I know lots of questions.
Please help.
Thanks in advance

I'll keep this quick since I am tired of typeing, if you need clarification on something just ask.

1. steel housing won't break as easily, however it will scratch the hell out of your frame
2. the current DX vee brakes are the same as the original (non parallel push) LX vees. You can find either for really cheap on Ebay. Yes Jeff runs one on the back (I think, too lazy to check), but with a XTR lever. Doesn't seem to have any problems locking, he doesn't run tar or a grind from what I've seen.
3. Avid's are great, and the company will stand behind you unlike Shimano. I've seen some great package deals on the net such as a pair of SD7 brakes with SD7 levers for $60 or $70. I think a few places have such deals. If you can get the Shimano's for cheaper, go for it. I doubt you will have problems with either brake setup.

The LX and DX levers are the exact same, well other than the cheesy red colour. They have a three position leverage adjustment, and the servo-wave gimmick which some people are big fans of. My preference is Avid, but that's just me, both levers work fine.

I run full length and have no problems, just try to have as few bends as possible for the best feel. You might want to consider running a tandem or bmx cable which are supposedly thicker for less stretch.

As for pads, try the stock ones and see how you like them. If they leave something to be desired, Planet X, Koolstop, Plazmatic, etc. all make good pads

Again, with either setup you should be smiling

Excellent price on SD7 brakes and levers (1/2 price), they probably only have a couple left though, so if anyone is interested, hurry!

Further down the page they have the brakes and levers seperate for $31.00 each too. That route is actually cheaper then the complete set. They sure are pretty.

Man, thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. Still a few questions left though.
1. Is the servo wave adjustment the not linear increasing brake power depending on how far the lever is pulled??
That's what some people seem to like on the LX levers in comparison to the avid levers from what I read.
The DX will be much cheaper for me here in germany than avids. However they only sell as complete set.(so getting just the DX would be almost no money and. If the red colour then will be all I can complain about I would be quite happy)
Are you exactly sure the levers are the same like LX with the non linear power increase?( I just ask because they do look slightly different, although very slightly. And one guy on the message board runs DX vees with LX levers and says they rock, dunno why he doesn't run the DX levers)
2. on full housing:
how about fixing it to the frame. I just used some strips to fix cables for my magura brakes but will they bend in the cables of vees too much thus increase friction?? Or do you use all the cable stops with several parts of housing (I assume you do not but I just only have experience with hs 33 yet).
3. I would like to run a bit longer cables to be able to spin the bars 360° and alittle more to do bar spins.(don't tell my I should get a BMX, I know this is a stupid idea:)
Or would it be crucial to have them as short as possible. In fact it wouldn't be that much more between XUPS (180) and 360 degrees on cables, just an additional half around the top tube which isn't much compared to the overall length. I can live without barspins but that would be a nice option.

Thanks alot

1. yep, servowave is the stepped leverage. Again, the levers are identical. Shimano is a very lazy company, they will label and relabel a product till they have squeezed all the possible earnings out of it. The DX brakes are identical to the original LX brakes, just painted red. The DX levers are identical to the current LX levers, Shimano is too lazy to change something when they already have it. If you can get the DX setup at a good price go for it.

2. I attach my housing by zip ties, cheap and effective. Don't worry about bending the outerhousing in, it isn't a factor.

3. This is the biggest problem when it comes to any brake using cables. The longer your housing is, the more mush you are going to feel at the lever. Try it out with regular Shimano cables and see if the brakes are too mushy for your tastes. If they are, then you can try a set of cables that claim to not compress such as the Avid's or similar, or maybe a tandem or bmx cable which is thicker (I hear Odyssey makes a good one) to keep cable stretch to a minimum.

Thanks again man.
today I got some sd7 and LX levers. In germany they are not that cheap but then again ordering somewhere else plus the shipping is the same.
The DX (good deal) are sold out so I do not have to have nightmares about those ugly red brakes :)
