| What do i need to know to build a Trials bike? | SpazFrog Oct 5, 2003 10:13 AM | | All i know at this present time is that the frame should be smaller than what i normally ride. I ride a 17inch frame, so that means a 15inch right? And the tires are also important... I've seen really fat slickstyle tires on trial bikes.
What do i need to look for to build myself a trials bike? |
| What are you trying todo? | EricTheRed Oct 5, 2003 10:42 PM | | Are you going to convert a xc/dual slolom/other bike into a trials bike? Do you want a bike that does trials and urban and other stuff too or is it going to be a dedicated trials bike?
I'm pretty sure you know this but, there are dedicated trials bikes on the market, most are hard to test ride before you buy though. |
| What i want to do is... | SpazFrog Oct 9, 2003 7:34 PM | | Next summer, do general urban-trials riding. I haven't gotten into it much before, but this winter i'm taking special fitness classes that have heavy emphasis on balance and coordination.
So i want to be able to extend that into biking and do trials riding. Like hopping on concrete planters and stuff like that. |
| Sounds like... | EricTheRed Oct 9, 2003 9:57 PM | | you've got some time to look for deals and also to save some cash, so you have lots of options.
you can start w/ a xc bike, thats how most people start learning trials. A good thing about starting this way is that if you find you perfer doing certain things eg: stair gaps (or whatever), then when you start looking for a specific frame you know what you need. Also these are generally a bit cheaper, and after you get a trials specific bike your old bike can become a beater or someone elses learning rig.
If you want to go and get an urban/trials bike there are several out there, planet X (can't remember name), echo urban, and maybe some more people will chime in that know of other frames that are easy to get in the US(if you are in the US). Basicly those frames are specific urban/trials frames short chain stays and long top tubes. I'd say they are pretty similar to their trials competion brothers, but beefier, and probably have a little longer chainstay.
If you can find some bikes to test ride (its gonna be hard but it sounds like you have some time) or if you can find some riders in your area to ride with ask lots of questions etc. thats probably a great way to start |
