Beginning Trials tips(6 posts)

Beginning Trials tipsdk
Dec 7, 2003 4:48 PM
Heya,
I need some tips for beginning trials moves, and I do mean beginning.
Okay, I'm able to hop my bike in place, forward, backward and around, trackstand sitting or standing, and put my front wheel up on stuff and stay there or hop around.

I want to be able to do the following:

Hop on my rear wheel
Lock my front brake and whip the rear wheel around 180 deg.

It's hard for me to do these things.

I'm just practicing them on my hardtail, clipped in.

What tips can I get?

Also, when putting my front wheel up on the park bench seat, where should I keep my good foot. Do I need to let off the rear brake in order to move my good foot back where it needs to be? It seems to move around a lot, and I'm spending too much concentration on keeping the chocolate (right?) foot where it feel comfortable.

Thanks!

step number one:

get rid of clipless pedals, and try to do all the stuff you can do now on platforms.

see ya in a few weeks ;-)

I second the move off clipless.I have seen nothing good come of them in trials. If you are hopping in one place your feet should noty be rotating on the pedals, but yes you can rotate them forward or backwards.

Okay, I'll get rid of the clipless and do this on flats. I had already put flats on my other bike for jumping, I'll just use those. Talk to ya in a bit and thanks.

I was amazed by the move from clipless back to flats. A good set of DMR V8s went on and I was totally screwed up at first - took me a week to get back to being able to bunnyhop and stuff but now the confidence it gives is amazing. It does have a habit of doing serious shin damage though.

As for your technique questions...how well can you trackstand? Good balance is the key to learning trials moves. Until you can balance well, moves will be difficult.

Turning on front wheel--one of the first 'tricks' I learned. Start by first just working on endos and finding your balance point on the front wheel. Once you've mastered that, figure out which way you're more comfortable spinning, and do an endo and turn your front wheel that direction. You should feel the bike start to follow in that direction. Once you find the right height/balance point, you can start throwing your body in the direction you are turning, and complete the 180.

Rear wheel hops--a somewhat more difficult move to learn. The cheater way that a lot of people trying to do this move use is to lock the rear brake and throw your weight back while lifting up on the handlebars. While this will get you up on the rear wheel, your momentum will cause you to hop backwards, rather than forward. The correct way is to get low on the bike and use a pedal kick while pulling up on the bars to get on the rear wheel. This takes a while to get the timing down with releasing the rear brake, kicking to get the front up, then locking the brake again. But once you find your balance spot on the rear wheel, eventually you don't even have to think about it and it just becomes natural.

The best way to learn is to ride with someone so you can watch how they do moves. Watching trials videos also helps. Good luck!
