| Schwinn Moab/Mesa/Sierra Frames - "Newb" Starter Frame? | EL_MATADOR Dec 8, 2003 2:54 PM | | I normally ride a 17 or 18" frame for XC and SS.
looking to start riding some urban assault and learn some basic trials moves (lurch, manual, etc.) -
not really sure of the budget I will have to play with here - so I started checking eBay a bit.
came across some size 13/14/15 Schwinn hardtails.
decent? will they hold up?
what size could you recommend? (I'm 5'10", 30-inch inseam -)
what length stem is typical? 70mm, 80mm, 90mm?
any light you might shed for this 'newb' is greatly appreciated! :)
thanks.

| Well | EricTheRed Dec 8, 2003 8:55 PM | | Many of us started learning on what we had, and then purchased a "real" trials bike when we had the cash. If you have an xc machine now then use that. I wouldn't spend the cash on a smaller xc bike unless you have a plan on how to use it(or get rid of it) once you've got a real trials bike. You will be able to learn trials moves on your xc bike but a real trials bike will help you progress more quickly. I did'nt use a smaller xc bike then transfer to a trials specific bike so i can't say how the progresion will occur but, it will probably be faster than your xc bike. There are some reletivly in expensive frames out there like Zoo, you should do some searches on how people feel about them (haven't ridden one so can't say).
If you still want to get a small xc bike then a 14/15" frame would be a good start, the problem you are going to run into (if you want as close to trials specific geometry) is a short top tube. So you will need to find a long and probably raised stem. For the beginning of your learning, doing basics like balance and pivots and even into the lurch stages an xc bike will be strong enough (unless you are just a beast on your equipment). but once you start doing gaps and drops you are going to need as trials/urban specific bike for your own safty. |
