| Not balls, skills. And those can't be bought | Fergie Dec 29, 2003 3:20 PM | | The good news and the bad news is that you can't get those skills with money, just practice. Good advice helps, but you do it yourself.
Are you talking about dropping off the table, or using it as some kind of launch ramp? If you are talking about dropping off it, it is the same basic move as dropping off a curb. In fact, that is where you should start. Work your way up.
First, lower your seat, and select a somewhat easy gear (middle and second to largest in the back). Pedal toward the edge, as the front wheel crosses the edge, pull up on the bars, and try to push the bike in front of you. You should land rear wheel first, and be able to set the front wheel down softly. If you slam on the landing, you are doing it wrong, and should practice where you have more confidence.
Trials is not about balls, it is about practicing until you have done a move a million times, so you try a slightly bigger move. Same thing for you as any of the pros, except they have a few thousand more hours of practice. |

I have decided that I would like to learn trials and got a trials specific bike and have been practicing for about 2 weeks. I have started off with the basics that need to be learned first. I can track stand, hop, piviot, back wheel hop about 8 times without falling over(LOL)and up about 24" ledges. Last night I started doing some drops and got comfortable with about 30" drops. I can't wait to learn to pedal kick. Like the other reply mentioned make sure you drop to the rear tire first. It should be a controled thing, if it is harsh you are not doing it correct.Practice! Practice! Practice! |
| THANKS MAN!!! | Itch Switch® Jan 1, 2004 7:04 PM | | I think I'll practice more. For some odd reason I just expect myself to lauch off a table top. |
| It takes time... Here is a trick | Fergie Jan 2, 2004 1:09 PM | | A picnic table is no joke! Sure, you are not going to see it in any videos or pro contests, but to most people it is crazy.
Practice on grass or soft dirt, and don't rush it. You will be a better rider if you develop your skills slowly, rather then going "big" and breaking parts and bones. Can't improve if you can't ride.
Here is a little trick I discovered while learing - Picnic tables are rollable! That is to say that you can usually roll from the top to the bench to the ground. Really. There is a moment of panic when the front wheel rolls off the bench with the back wheel on the deck, but before the front wheel goes under, the rear wheel drops to the bench, and you are are still on the bike! It is like doing really steep stairs, and it is not as bad as it sounds. Lower your seat all the way, stay loose, and don't use too much (if any) front brake. Also changing the angle that you approach things makes a big difference. Try rolling down, or hopping up stairs with the bike at an angle to the stairs. Can sometimes make things easier. |
