SS or Gears?(4 posts)

SS or Gears?Lee W.

Hey guys, I have a few questions.

First off, I'm going to build up a trials/urban bike soon now that my DH bike is done. I've decided that I'm going to get a Azonic Steelhead frame and build from there.

What I can't decide is if I want to do a geared bike or a SS... I want something that can do both trials and a lot of urban/skate part riding on soo... I just really don't know.

If I do SS I'll build Rhyno Lites on a Surley hub and if I do geared, Rhyno Lites on XT hubs and use a road cassette.

Any tips for a fork? I'm thinking a Z1 and call it good, I just don't know if I want QR20 on it or not, that jacks up the price...

Oh well, if anyone has any thoughts please share them.

Laters all,

Lee W.

Couple of things to consider:
- If you plan to compete in any trials comps, you need to have gears to ride in the stock class.
- Since you plan to do urban and trials with the bike, you'll probably want gears, as trials requires a low gear, but for urban and skate parks you'd want higher gearing for speed.
- A Z1 with 4 or 5 inches of trials will make straight up trials moves hard, but would be nice for big drops and urban riding. Perhaps an 80mm travel fork would be a nice compromise.

Thanks jojo, that helps. Any sugestions on a good 80mm fork? Maybe a Fox or something? Or would a XC Marzocchi work?

I run an 85mm Marzocchi MX Comp on my trials bike. It's very stiff (no flex) and because it's coil/oil (no air), it is very durable and low maintenance. However, it is a little on the heavy side (4.4 lbs) but once you get used to it it's nice.
