newbie looking for bikeBlaze
Aug 28, 2001 7:17 PM
I'm getting back into mountain biking to keep up with my teenage son. He is riding a Klein while I have an old Schwinn with no shock!! Needless to say, I get beat up in the shoulders and back on the trails that we ride. Anyway, I'm looking for a decent bike, hardtail, that would get me through our 5-15 mile rides. I need a shock sysytem that would work for a person that is 185 pounds.

Suggestions to begin the search.

How much do you want to spend? I would say most off the rack bikes would be set up for somebody close to your weight. You might be a little on the heavy side for some. I was 185 when I got my Rockhopper and it was a little soft for me. I also upgraded from a rigid Schwinn, what a difference! Other than that I suggest get the one that feels the most comfortable based on your height, reach, etc. and fits your price. Check out supergo.com or other sites to get an idea of prices and go to the LBS and ride as many as you can.

Thanks for the input. I want to stay around the $450-550 mark. I feel anything less would probably be junk. What do you think about the GT Avalanche 2.0. Bikesale.com has them at a great deal.

In terms of componentry the avalanche is about the best you'd get for $500. I know airbomb.com had a bike that was ~$500 that would also compare to the GT. I would recommend riding a few first if you can. Also, as you probably know, GT's warranty is uncertain right now due to bankruptcy. If you haven't yet, check out the reviews on MTBR.

I have that bike from airbomb. The component list changes from day to day, so just look it over. So far I am very happy with the bike.( 1 year ) A few of the components had to go, but over all, I am real happy with it. They usually come with a crappy fork, but they will leave the fork off for you, and discount the price of the fork from the cost of the bike. I have heard people talk bad about airbomb, and maybe I have just been lucky, but I have dealt with them 4 times now, and not had any problems.
