Help with hardtail sizing(3 posts)

Help with hardtail sizingSteven

I'm 6'00" with a 31" inseam. I'd like to buy a Jamis Dakota XC. The 19" has a stand over or 30.88" and a top tube of 23.25", the 17" has a stand over of 29.54" and a top tube of 22.75". Although I prefer the standover on the 17", the 19" feels more comfortable. The 17" almost feels like my weight is too far over the front wheel. Which size do you guys recommend?

Well, compared to me (also at 6' and a 34" inseam) you have shorter legs and a longer torso. You should be looking at bikes with a long top tube (probably around 23.5 to 24 inches). Also, for your shorter legs maybe try to find a frame with more standover clearance. One of my bikes is a Voodoo Bizango. It has a 23.5" TT and 29" of standover. It gets the large standover clearance by extending the seat tube about 3 inches above the TT. If the 19" Jamis has enough standover clearance it would be a good choice or you could consider a Voodoo (if you can find one, they are out of business) or a Kona HT which has the same dropped top tube design to provide a couple more inches of b@ll room.

If so, don't worry about it - buy the Jamis.

Otherwise, with a 31in. inseam and a 30.88in. standover, you will be risking the family heritage with each ride.

I second the long top tube notion, a stretched cockpit will be more comfortable for your long torso. I would try to find at least a 23in. top tube. I am 6'1" with a 34in. inseam, and I find I like @ 24in top tube length.

As far as the standover goes, find a frame with more standover, with a lowered or bent "junk saver" top tube.
