Help a newb w/$700 to spend on a HTBoostedA4

Hello, I'm looking to get more into mountain biking and I want to get a decent hardtail. I plan on riding on the road as well as XC (singletrack likely, roots, trees, leaves, etc..). I am looking to spend around $700. I want something that fits well (I'm small at 5'4" 120lbs), has a good, strong frame and a good fork. Components of the bike aren't as important right now. I've came up with 3 possibilities so far, and they are as follows:
-Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo
-Marin Eldridge Grade
-Cannondale F500

Anyone have any comments on these bikes? Do you have any other recommendations? Would you recommend buying used? Thanks for your time.

Gotta go for the Giant Ranier SE. It generally retails for $699, and for the price, can't be beat by anyone. Marzzochi forks, Avid disc breaks. If $700 is your limit, this bike blows everything out of the water for the price. An Excellent bike for the $$$.

I agree with Pablo... go for the Giant Ranier. Just purchased a 2002 model for $700 and highly recommend it. Upgrades include LX rear der., carbon fiber spacers, improved seat and tires. The Avid disc brakes are excellent. Does extremely well on trails and bike paths. Couldn't recommed a better bike for $700.
