Moots Mootaineer vs. Smoothie(5 posts)

Moots Mootaineer vs. Smoothiesturzinator
Aug 30, 2001 12:30 PM
.... selling blood for the last 6 months and parting with one kidney has been vicariously saved for this potential purchase....

Anyone out there directly compared the Smoothie to the Mootaineer? I'm lookin' for a good climber for use in the Rockies region (I think both have rear lockout) and something that can bomb a little better downhill than the YBB. Perhaps some racing too. Closest dealer is a 6 hour drive, so I would appreciate the input from anyone that has ridden either.

THANKS!

i have ybb and mootaineer.
mootaineer climbs quite well almost as well as YBB, just a bit heavier. i never locked out the rear shock as it barely move even when i am standing (i do have a smooth pedaling stroke). it bombs down the hill much much faster than YBB, as expected. i am interested in smoothie as well, but there are so few of them i have not tested one yet. as far as weight goes, smoothie is just a tiny bit heavier than mootaineer.

Great, thanks for the input. Basically looking for a "fun" bike to take on the long hauls... i.e. big climbs followed by even bigger descents! I have a Litespeed Tsali and it's great for the climbs and technical stuff, but squirly on the big root-infested descents. All my friends that I drop on the climbs breeze by on the way down. I'll have none of that!

Well, this half is convinced. Now to convince the other half that a new car is overrated! HA!

sturzinator,

if you have only one bike, it will be a more difficult decision b/n smoothie vs. mootaineer. if you have tsali (much like my ybb) i suggest mootaineer over the smoothie so you get two distinctively different bikes. smoothie has bearings (thus a bit heavier) while mootaineer has bushings with grease guard. my never squeaked. just need to pump grease intot the fittings (3 fittings) every 300 miles or so.

Faced the same dilemma not too long ago. Went with the Smoothie. I have 6 days on it. Awesome bike- fast and nimble. I ride on the east coast so no epic climbs/descents, but I'm definately faster on the climbs and downhills. Was on an Ibis Szazbo that I loved, but the Smoothie is even better. Good luck with the decision.
