| 01 vs 02 Ellsworth Truth | Erin Jan 7, 2002 10:01 PM | | Anyone able to buy an 02 Truth yet? They say it's a half pound lighter. Thinking of buying an 02 but wondering if the 01 frame is a better buy as it is probably a stronger frame. Hard believe they can take off a half pound and still keep the frame as strong/stiff. Any help here? |
| re: 01 vs 02 Ellsworth Truth | gryk Jan 8, 2002 6:20 AM | | From what I'm told, the 01 is a stronger frame. The 01 has a gusset on the top tube near the head tube where the 02 doesn't. The 02 has a tapered top tube, the pivot assy & BB have been reworked, and the dropouts have been revised. Enough to make a difference, to some yes, to me I need to lose 1/2 to 10 lbs to make a difference.
If this isn't enough help, contact the good folks at speedgoat(.com) or jbmountainbikes(.com) for more info. GOOD LUCK!!!! |
| I thought it was the other way around? | Nat Jan 8, 2002 7:56 AM | | I thought the '02 had the gusset at the head tube/top tube junction. Am I wrong? |
| I thought it was the other way around? | gryk Jan 8, 2002 8:30 AM | | Your correct. The earlier 01's didn't have the gusset but the later 01's have the gusset. |
| I thought it was the other way around? | the wiz Jan 8, 2002 8:48 AM | | The later 01 models have a gusset on the top tube to help beef it up as people were running 5" Marzocchi freeride forks on a lightweight XC frame.
The 02 has different machined bits which are lighter and stiffer than the 01. Not 1/2lb mind you, at the most, 1/4lb.
The 02 is as strong, if not stronger than the 01.
Both Speedgoat and JB are good dealers, and offer great customer support. |
| Thanks for the clarification | gryk Jan 8, 2002 9:52 AM | | I second the customer support rec'd by JB as well as Ellsworth. |
| Here's pictures | Steve from JH Jan 8, 2002 11:21 AM | | I'm posting a pic of the '02 linkage and seattube. Next I'll post a pic of the '01.
Notice there is more metal (smaller holes) in the rocker arm on the '02. The brace welded in front of the seat tube is smaller on the '02 but could be just as strong. The BB area is conventional looking on the '02. It looks heavier and stronger on the '01. |
| frame changes? | FredK Jan 8, 2002 5:46 PM | | Is it me, or has the nice extruded-then-machined BB of the 2001 been omitted in favor of piercing the seattube, then welding a pivot in? I wonder if it is stronger. Certainly it would be cheaper to do without an additional extrusion.
The rocker looks a lot beefier, though. I guess the frame has received more beef in a lot of key areas, like the toptube gusset. |
| frame changes? | the wiz Jan 8, 2002 7:01 PM | | Actually, the 02 has a different machined extrusion, which is stronger because the tubes get a better contact on it. It also has considerably less mass, which is where most of the weight savings occur.
The swingarm itself is also stiffer, but not noticably lighter. |
| thanks for pointing it out | FredK Jan 9, 2002 10:15 AM | | The first picture of the newer frame doesn't have much contrast, so I couldn't tell what is going on. Anyway, I guess the extrusion has a different shape, such that the downtube is welded onto the BB, and the seattube is welded to the upper portion of an extrusion that is an integral part of the BB. If only they'd make more sizes... |
