Which Company or Steel Builder should I use for a custom steel frame? What material? True Temper Platinum OX, Reynolds 853,???????????? Any suggestions would be great. Do a mix of steels on the bike? but mainly who do I work with? Who do I get to do the work? Who's Steel frame should I be riding?

thanks

Sean

.....that's built closest to where you live and then you can go and get a raport going with the builder. Take his advice on the tubing too. All this is far more important than the "flavor of the month" name on the downtube.

The ones who say "XXX is best" make me laugh as they have no idea what some local backwoods builder is making.
Good advice. Know any steel builders in NJ?Rev Bubba

IF seems to be the closest in the Northeast but I'm sure there are other's I don't know about. Your advice about making contact with a builder is very sound.

how about northern-central PA? You know you want to replace the I Drive, why not get a frame from here? When you come to talk to him, I could show you around on the southern NY trails.
It would be to replace the ZaskarRev Bubba

I'd probably replace the I-Drive with a Titus if and when the frame breaks.

......what about Seven Cycles in Boston? They build a steel frame with the same passion as their Ti wonders. But I'd go the extra for their Ti if I had the $$. Hey I did have the $$! I got one!

It's the ultimate (for me) hard tail frame and their customization is 2nd to none. You don't have to visit these guys - it's all done through a dealer and over the phone with 7. Belmont Wheelworks is their biggest volume dealer.
ThanksRev Bubba

Leaning towards steel to replace the aluminum hardtail but this is more a pipe dream at the moment.

I have an 853 bike from a local builder and I love it. As far as the different steels go, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I picked 853 because it was thought to be the best at the time. I think Columbus Foco is now considered the best but I've been happy with the 853. Go with whatever your builder recommends.

As far as mixing steels goes, there are lots of reasons to do it (less costly, more stiff/more active, etc.). Once again, ask the opinion of the builder and see what they are most comfortable doing (and what fits best in your budget).
agree with the above adviceHank

I live in Roanoke,Va. As far as close to me I have been looking at Brew Racing Frames. I have heard good things about him. I believe there are one or 2 in Charlottesville also. Please let me know any others in my surrounding area with a good background and anything you can put in to help me with a custom steel frame whatever advice given is greatly appreciated.

thanks much,

Sean

....has a good rep and has been around for a while. Beware of anyone who tells you any builder, frame, tubing, welding, painting, angles or whatever are the "best". They haven't sampled them all. Most of them haven't sampled any. Do your homework, find a small builder within driving distance and get right into it. You'll love the experience. I have a few times.

I think he lives in VA.

Be sure to study up on bike design a bit and also be able to articulate what you like/dislike about your current ride. This will help when you discuss your new frame with the builder.

Here are some typical numbers a builder will be interested in

Is Scott Paisly (spelling may be a bit off) who works out of Blue Wheel in C-Ville. Known more for road bikes though. Nice guy, and well respected in the community.

Coolhand (I would get a Seven Sola Steel custom myself-- but thats just me).
