Me again... Trek vs Rockey Mountain?isukathis

Hello again, sorry to be a bother... I've now been looking at the Rockey Mountain bikes and like the setup of the Oxygen and Blizzard. What does anyone think about these bikes compared to the Trek 8000/8500?

PS I'm Canadian, I might get a deal on the RMs...

Thanks...

Rocky Mountain (there's no "e" in it) is made in BC, Canada. The Oxy is a very fine Alu bike, stiff, and good value. The Blizzard is recognized as one of the finest 853 steel bikes available anywhere. The '02 Blizzard has disc tabs, the '01 doesn't.

If the Trek is US made (not assembled, MADE) in the US, NAFTA sez no duty on the bike. NAFTA is NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT.

Both are excellent makes.
YOU gotta decide for yourself. Jim

From my post below, you will know that I have 2 Rocky bikes (hardtail Vertex and FS Instinct). However, I recognize that there are several other good manufacturers out there (so I won't say Rocky is the only one to buy!).
Trek bikes may be well designed and spec'd, but are mass produced in huge volumes. Probability of getting a defect, or "off-spec" is high (as noted in one Mountain Bike mag edition). Rocky produces bikes at a much smaller volume, and has a formal quality assurance process.

The Blizzard is a long living classic bike that has been around for many years. Rocky tried to drop it from its lineup, but got outrage from its customers and followers. It is a well made, time tested steel hardtail of high quality and performance. It compares to the Bontrager race bikes that are no longer available.

Why didn't I buy one? Good question. I got caught up in the super-light aluminum craze. If you don't race, get the Blizzard. Especially good bike on single-track where Trek bikes don't really shine.

My $0.02.
Dunno about that...Gary

I'm riding a Rocky FS now. My last bike was a Trek 950 hardtail - though I love the Rocky, the Trek had some definite advantages in tight singletrack. I'd go as far as to say that it was the better handling bike. Not sure how it would compare to a Blizzard - probably a more direct comparison than to my Spice.

Yer right about the quality control though - the rear triangle on my Trek was visibly off, although it never really affected the ride and wasn't bad enough for me to bother getting it straightened.
O.K., Yes...Ricksom

My Rocky Vertex (HT) rides better in single-track than my Rocky Instinct (FS). Something to do with a looser rear end, and a longer wheelbase I assume.

As far as mass produced, the HIGH END Treks are made in America with much more attention than the production models. Many companies lose money on their high end bikes for this reason. I know that trek has a kick ass product, but so does Rocky Mountain. I just bought a Trek Fuel 100 instead of the Element SC. I dont know about RM's service, but treks is 5 chili's. Only problem with trek is all of the crappy componentry. I belive that the RM comes with Raceface, correct? I know it is specd better than the treks this is treks weakspot. I guess they figure that if you enjoy riding that much you will spec up a frame. This can be expensive.

Conclusion...Sit on them, then decide.
