| Schwinn Rocket88 Stage 4 for $499? or wait? | lateshow Jan 11, 2002 11:24 PM | | Hello All -
I'm a newbie mtn bike rider who just started riding this past summer. I purchased a bike 1.5 yrs ago for primarily on campus transportation while in college, i ended up with a 2000 Schwinn Mesa - Rst 281 fork, cheap single walled alex rims, etc...
While I still like this bike I am wanting another bike that is more suited for trail riding. My current bike needs a new front wheel for sure (bent it earlier this summer and was trued out at the LBS as good as they could get it, goes out of true easily), possibly a new rear rim, and I went and rode the other day and noticed a new problem:
When in an easy gear going up a hill the cranks would be able to spin for a second without causing any forward progession, is this chainsuck?
So I'm left at this point; dump a little money into this bike for a new wheel or wheelset, and possibly a new chain/drivetrain? Or I could go out and try and get another bike to get me by for a year or two.
I'm not looking for a bike that is going to get me by for 5-6 years, I know that at my price range $500 and below I won't be getting really high quality stuff. I'm okay with that, I'm a senior in college and should be out in 1 year and beginning to make more money, which would lead to a new bike in about 2 yrs.
So with a $500 budget, what do you suggest? There are seems to be some good deals on schwinns b/c of them being bought out by pacific. Or do you think that with a $500 budget I should forget about new bike until I can afford something in the $1500 range which would be 1-2 years.
Any and all comments welcome
Thanks -

| the way I see it...... | Dave in Md. If it holds up for 2 years until you plan to buy a new bike, then you are ahead. But if it breaks, you're out o'luck and will be buying a new bike(or putting the old parts on a new frame) quicker than you had planned. They are cheap now, depends how much of a risk you want to take. |

I would just assume no frame warrenty to be on the safe side. That said, it still sounds like a good deal to me. Everything else on the bike is warrentied by the component companies. The worst case scenario I can think of is the frame breaks (always a slim possibility), you cannot get parts (we don't know what the deal is with that, yet), and you use the stuff off the Schwinn to build a new bike. It seems to me the components on the bike are worth close to what you are paying. If you fix your present ride, you may end up dropping a few hundred into it over the next 2 years, anyway. If I only had $500 and needed a bike, I would seriously consider that deal. Kapusta |
