Buying a GT?(4 posts)

Buying a GT?Wheelbent

I am buying a new bike this year. I was thinking of a GT Avalanch 1.0. Would it be worth buying one since they went bankrupt? I can buy it with a $500.00 off the MRSP, so you think it would be a good deal? Thanks, Wheelbent

I wouldn't do it because they(GT) are out of business and if you break something on the bike made by GT, you can't get it replaced. This comes into play if you break the derailleur hanger, if it breaks, have fun trying to find a new one.

the issues with gt are well known and my view is that the prices of the gt bikes already more than reflect any issues you might have with them. i'd say go ahead, from a parts standpoint there's no real issue as they use standard parts. as i understood the situation gt was purchased out of chapter 11 so it's likely warranty will be picked up by the acquiring company (not totally sure on this).

I'd say go for it. It's a great deal. I'd be leary of the full-suspension models as you might have a parts issue somewhere down the line, but for a hardtail, there's no big issues.

I've ridden moutain bikes for 10 years and never once had a frame issue. I don't think you need to worry about it for a hardtail. And if you're frame does fail in 5 years, buy a new frame and move your parts over and you're back on the trails for cheap.

Aaso, take a look a Schwinn. They're in the same boat (owned GT), and you can get great deals there too.
