| I took a brief spin on a Truth | Quattro Apr 12, 2002 6:48 AM | | In the parking area of a local ride.It was set up with
a Stratos coil rear shock.I was amazed how plush it was.
The rebound dampning was excellent as it just felt
very nice.It felt like more travel than 4 in.My question
is for the Truth owners. Is that Romic rear shock make
a big difference in the general feel of the Truth?
It felt like this bike could be setup as a nice light-
weight trailbike. The travel seemed totally adequate.
There are some 2001 frames at a discount and I've
talked to Ellsworth and they recommend the 2001 frame.
From what I gathered, the 2002 is lighter as some
material has been removed from the rear shock mounting
and the actual linkage looks like it has been drilled
out a bit more.I can't tell if the seat tube gusseting is
different.Any info on the differences?Do you think the
1/2 lb. difference is maybe too much to make it a reliable
Trailbike(2002)?At 180-185, I'm concerned about strength.
I am also wondering if they are just trying to get rid of
overstocked 2001 models and the newer ones are just as
strong but with the lighter weight.Maybe they over
compensated when some of the seat tubes broke on the earlier
models. The bike felt very light and I could even try discs
and not feel bad about the weight.I'm such a weight weenie.
I'm just thinking the 2001 with a coil shock(Romic) would put it
at 6 lb.That built up with Avids(discs) would still put
it at a between 25 and 26.What do think? What does that grey
Truth look like in person? |
| I'll try to answer your points in order | Steve from JH Apr 12, 2002 7:50 AM | | The Stratos is a good shock but the Romic is better. I've had both. The Romic is more sophisticated and much more adjustable.
Material has been removed from the shock mounting area but I think the new design will be stronger even if lighter. They may have eliminated a potential stress riser situation down near the front derailer by tapering off the reinforcing material gradually instead of abruptly.
The linkage has more material up in the rocker arm area, but the drop out area has been changed so that the seat stay hollow section extends down farther. Less weight there, but I don't know about strength. I haven't heard of any frames breaking at the dropout.
If by seat tube gusseting you mean the junction of the down tube and seat tube and BB, it is different on the 02 and doesn't look as strong. But somebody posted that the difference was internal and that it was actually stronger and lighter.
They were indeed overstocked on 01 models and that's how I got mine for 1K by trading in my '99. I've got it set up with Avid discs, Romic rear shock, old X-vert Super. As far as how it rides, it is as much a step above the old Truth as the old one was above any other frames I had tried. |
| I just got an 01 at the deal price.......... | The Truth Apr 12, 2002 8:57 AM | | I just got my first ride in on my Truth and love it, so far. I have it set up as a race/trail bike and it comes in at just above 25 pounds. From what I understand the only diff in the 01 and 02 is the tower mount for the shock and the BB area. The suspension rocker arm and the all that jazz are exactly the same. That was my major concern that the suspension wasn't being overhauled. Here's a pic of an 01 black Truth......... |
| what do they do with old frames? | Louie Apr 12, 2002 11:27 AM | | Question about:

Any idea what they do with the old frames when you turn them in? I always wondered about that. Scrap heap? Recycle bin? Weld them into furniture? Are there kids in third world countries riding on donated truths? That'd be sweet. |
| They said they were going to melt 'em and recycle 'em | Steve from JH Apr 12, 2002 12:04 PM | | It is a shame, all right. A pure marketing decision. Anyone ending up with an old frame would be one less potential customer for a new one I guess. |
| re: I took a brief spin on a Truth | Sunny Apr 12, 2002 7:58 AM | | With the Romic, a 2001 medium frame would be more like 6.3lb or 6.4lb. In the few rides that I had on the Romic, it wasn't a night-and-day difference from the AD-12 that I had on it. The shock is being re-valved so we'll see...
As far as the frame differences goes, the seatstays have changed in '02 and they look like they should be stiffer.
What does the grey one look like?
