| 2001 vs. 2002 Shimano Deore Components | Chris905 Apr 12, 2002 7:02 PM | | Does anybody know how to tell the difference between 2001 and 2002 Shimano Deore (Deore, LX, XT, XTR) components? Is there any difference between them?
Recently I have visited some bike shops where I have been finding everything from people trying to sell me 2001 bikes as 2002, and also finding 2002 and 2001 bikes with different components as listed in a catalog when I was told that the bike was stock.
I am looking at fs mtb's and I think I have narrowed it down to either the Kona stinky or the manomano, if anybody has any comments on these two bikes please post and let me know. |

The 02 Deore, LX, XT, and XTR, look the same as their respective 01 counterparts. As far as the parts changes on the bike vs the catalog thing. Read the small print on the catalog. It will say some where in it that "Product specifications are subject to change wtihout prior notice". That is to cover the manufacturer should they spec a bike with a specific fork (or what ever) and for some reason that fork is not available whether due to production problems etc. That being said, a manufacturer that cannot get the part that they initially speced a bike with will sometimes upgrade that part one level, or at least use a comparable part from another manufacutrer. Most often though the manufacutrer will have to lower a spec to meet his production cost goals if the original isn't available. I have a Trek 7000 that was originally speced with an LX front D that came with a Deore, only the very first of that years production run came with the LX as originally speced. Not a big deal as the Deore is a good front derailleur. So be cautious when you find changed specs. I would be suspicious of anything lower than one setp down from what was orginally speced in the catalog.
