2000 sugar 1 - How much is too much to pay?Terry

I found out about a shop mech. that has one for sale. It looks to be in good shape, and obviously well maintained. He is asking 1700, and will do a full overhaul before selling. Here are the specs as I remember them:
XT front/ rear der / cassette
Chris king headset and wheelset
syncros crankset
Sid XC front fork
Sid rear shock
Thompson seat post
bontrager race lite stem
titec hellbent riser
SRAM 9.0 brakes
That's a bit high...Squash

even with the upgrades. The 00 Sugar 1 retailed for $3050.00, full MSRP. The rule of thumb for a used bike is to take the MSRP and divide it in half for the first year of use, that leaves $1525, Then subtract $100 to $200, depending on condition, for every year of use there after. So giving the bike the benefit of the doubt and subtracting $100 for 01 and 02 that nets you $1325. Component upgrades usually don't count for squat unless they are absolutely brand new, i.e. NEVER USED. It's the frame that counts, everything else is pretty much secondary. If the bike is in SHOW ROOM condition then $1700 might be reasonable. But as it stands he's about $400 over what the bike is actually worth.

I concur with most of your statement, but that line about...wfl3

...upgrades not counting for "squat" is absolutely absurd. Quality component upgrades (King, Thomson, Syncros) that are durable and an improvement over the stock parts must be considered in the equation.
If I'm wrong would someone please send me their used CK wheelset since they're not worth squat - I'll pay the shipping costs ;)
I talking about when selling a whole bike, not the parts...Squash

Quality upgrades like king head set, can certainly make a difference, but not that much. I wouldn't pay the guy $100 more than the bike was worth just because he put a king head set on it. Unless perhaps it was a brand new king head set. A used part is a used part and adds ABSOLUTELY NO VALUE TO THE BIKE. What I mean by upgrades not counting for squat is that they will not make alot of difference when factored in as used parts, which is exactly what they are, used parts. For what the guy has "upgraded" on that bike it ain't worth the extra $400! The only actual upgrades made to the bike were the syncros cranks, thompson seat post, and the king head set. The rear derailleur has been down graded from XTR (which was the original spec on the Sugar 1), the 9.0 brakes are comparable to the Avids that came stock on the bike, as is the hellbent riser bar. The rest is STOCK!!! All of the upgraded parts are probably at least a year old and well used. That's what I mean by they don't amount to squat. And you will notice that I said that the only way they are worth any thing is if the upgraded part is BRAND NEW!!! Find a shop that takes trade-ins and try to get them to give you more than what I've stated (using the stated formula to figure price then subtract an additional 20%) for a bike because it has "upgrades". They'll laugh you right out of the store. The year of manufacture of the bike has WAY more to do with price than the components that are installed on it. And even that is heavily dependent on the over all condition of the frame. The price that I gave as reasonable is for a bike in top condition.

You left out the most expensive upgrade on that bike...wfl3

...the King wheelset. Quality wheelsets are in general the most expensive upgrade on a bike. So a bike with a used bontrager cockpit and a used xt or racelite wheelset is worth the same as that bike with a used thomson cockpit and a used king wheelset? You'd be an idiot to trade a bike in to a shop anyway - unless you like bendin' over. They can laugh all they want, I'd sell elsewhere and get what it's worth. I always figure upgrades into my asking price and have never had a problem selling any of my bikes. If you can get upgraded for the price of stock more power to ya, but it won't be mine.
i can give you one for1700 canadian

Don't forget that the Lifetime Warranty from Fisher is null and void when you buy that bike. The warranty states that "Gary Fisher Bicycles provides each original retail purchaser of the bicycle a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship in the bicycle frame......"

If the frame ever breaks, you're SOL!! The warranty can be worth $1000 or more if the frame ever needs replacing.

$1700 sounds high to me. For just a few hundred more, you can get a 2002 Trek FUel 98 or Sugar 2.......Brand New with the full warranty. Also, the components on the 2002 Fuel98 and Sugar2 are as good or better than the year 2000 Sugar1 components (except the King stuff).

I'd think that $1000 - $1300 would be more reasonable.

Good Luck!!

2000 was the first year of production for the Sugar line. There were some issues with the frames....as is common with new designs. I'd get a new bike in the 1700 - 2000 price range with a Lifetime Warranty!
