RockyMountain "Instinct" Vs. Gaint "NRS 1"(6 posts)

RockyMountain "Instinct" Vs. Gaint "NRS 1"MTBikerX

To: those of MT Knowledge
I've norrowed my search down to these two bikes, the Rocky Mountian "Instinct" and the Gaint "NRS 1". I've heard good reviews for both. I'm 5'11" 180lbs. 32" inseam and 34" arm reach. Currently I own a Fisher hard tail which I enjoy but it could be a little quicker. Most of my riding takes place in Michigan, so mostly tight singletrack and hilly to very hilly terrain but no huge climbs and semi technical. Please help my tax money is burning a hole in my pocket.

I got to demo an NRS 1. Great bike bang for buck. However, there are some things to be aware of. Imo the NRS is not a fully active design. The bike extends the shock with each pedal stroke. This causes some different characteristics. First if your pedal force is higher than the bump force than the shock will not compress, thus no suspension. This makes the Nrs feel rough or hardtail like on short/ little bumps or chatter/ stutter sections. The other thing I noticed is that there was a serious amount of brake jack on downhills under hard braking. Brake jack causes the suspension to extend intead of compress this in return makes you feel like you are on a hardtail instead of a full suspension bike. ( the suspension IMO is there to be active and smoothing out the rough stuff to allow you comfort and increase you effort and speed downhill.) I still think this bike has a place. It is perfect for the rider who is not sold on full suspension or does not want to give up the hardtail. Remember, this is just my opinions after the demo I did. My sugestion is to ride all the bikes you are interested in and then make a choice.

go rocky...i have an element (same frame as instinct) and i say it's the best fs i have ever ridden, and i have tried alot of bikes!

the design is super active, doesn't bob, and the bike takes abuse like nobody's business. i can't say enought good things about that bike.

I ride an 1998 element TO. it's old and will need to be replaced soon, but i cant bear to do it, because i like the bike so much. i cant say anything about the Giant. if you go rocky, get in touch with a good dealer, because you will probably need new bushings about every year, and i suggest having the dealer do it.
good Rocky dealer..

MTBikerX,

If you're in the Metro Detroit area, I've had a good experience with Metro Bike & Sport in Clinton Township, good guys, but I don't know how much of a deal you can get on current year models. There's Galyan's in Novi now that carries RM among others, but appears to be more af an REI type store (crud, it looks huge, I'm going to have to swing down there), someone mentioned here that he got a '01 Blizzard for $1200 from there, so perhaps some deals to be found.
That was me...SJT

All '01 Rocky's are on closeout at Galyans, but they only have limited stock of course. The sale prices are incrdible like their race hardtail (Vertex I believe?) which was priced at over $2000 was going for something like $1400. They had all of the FS models on closeout as well, but I wasn't looking to buy a FS so I didn't look at the prices...I'm sure they had similar discounts (33% off or abouts). Good deals to be found, and they offer free lifetime adjustments. The service I received from them has been superior to some LBS's I've visited, hopefully their service will remain at this level.
