02 Fuel 90 with Disc Brakes or without Disc BrakesShashank

well, i;m going to buy a 2002 trek fuel 90 in about two weeks i just want to know should i get one with disc brakes or without disc brakes. If i go with out the local bike shop is selling it for 1399.99, but if i go with disc the are selling it for 1749.99. I want to know if the price difference is worth it. Also if i go without discs then i will replace the brakes with avid single digit 7 and speed dial 7 levers, both front and back.

Your help is valued

$200.00 off MSRP, which is a good deal this time of year. If you have the cash go disc brakes. They far better in wet, mud, snow, or heat, and are certainly more powerful than V-brakes. Makes for a feeling of confidence to know that your brakes won't fade on a 90 degree day on hairy down hill run. If you're just a fair weather XC rider then the V's are fine. But if you ride in less than ideal conditions then discs are certainly a worth while investment. Even rainy day commutes on the bike would be worth the extra cash for the performance of the discs.

That's the retail price listed on the Treks around here. Trek must be like Specialized. They have a "low" normal retail and then a "high" retail that some of the "stick it to you" shops price at.
Umm...no, the prices that I quoted were....Squash

Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. MSRP for the fuel 90 is $1549.99, for the 90 Disc it's $1949.99. That's right out of the book. That is simply the suggested retail. Trek does not set the price that their dealers sell the bikes for. It is not uncommon to find a dealer that sells slightly below MSRP on a regular basis. MSRP and retail can quite often be different. The only time Trek gets cranky about it is when a dealer is gouging for more than the MSRP.

I think the bigger question isn't disc or no-disc but price differential. The $350 price differential can easily be used to purchase discs for your bike after trying out the stock brakes. I love my Hayes, and have had XT before that (they are virtually the same thing from what I have seen, less squeal on the XT though). I've also heard and seen wonderful things from the avid mechanicals, and thats a cost savings option you may want to try. At $99 per wheel retail, you can save yourself $150 right there, not to mention having a backup set of linear-pulls, or selling them for a bit of cash.

Options are there, I'd purchase the non-disc bike, and buy discs that you have researched and can be comfortable with.

you're forgetting the wheels. the fuel 90 non-disc does not come with disc hubs. good luck getting a decent wheel and disc brakes for $350.

If he buys the non-disk version, in order to add hydraulic disk brakes, he will need new wheels (with disk hubs), new brake levers and new shifters (front and rear).

The brake levers and shifters on the Fuels are 1 piece. It'll cost way more than $200 to upgrade to disk.

If he wants the disk, it's best to get it up front.

You are right, something I totally forgot. Go with the disc brake model then, you won't be disappointed.
