| Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | Swine Apr 15, 2002 6:45 PM | | Hey everyone, im a heavy rider(190). im lookin into a new bike because ive have broken bb, front shock, and rear shock on my i-drive(im thinkin frame is bought to go). im the type of rider who enjoys xc-ing, but when i see a jump, drop, or anytype of downhill run. my friends and i are all overit. but we also seem to be going bigger and bigger every day(we push each other).
Soo... im needing a versitile bike. i dont need a full-blown downhill/freeride rig, just an allrounder. ill be fine with the bike as long as it peddals well. id also like to keep the weight down below 35lbs. mech discs are fine with me. price needs to stay as close as if not below 2g's
bikes ive been looking at....Santa cruz heckler, ac air, marin Wolf ridge, Specialized Enduro,...and maybe like a stinky but i dont think i need something that hardcore or heavy. Good prices and awsome parts spec are a plus. thnx alot |
| re: Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | sakdjgb Apr 15, 2002 7:11 PM | | How bout Kona Bear, Rocky Mountain Edge, or buy a Santa Cruz Bullit frame and swap your old parts over? I hear good things about the Giant AC bikes and some say Specialized Enduros are good all-rounders. I don't think any of the bikes listed will top 35 lbs unless you build up a Bullit with heavy parts. You have plenty of choices so have fun test riding. gl. |
| re: Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | Swine Apr 16, 2002 12:21 PM | | id rather go for something that pedals a little better than the bullit, plus thats a little over kill for me(i dont need that much rear wheel trav yet).. i ahve been looking at the bear and the slayer.
Man....to many bikes... i need to find somebodyy who owns some of these so i can ride them and eliminate some. |
| re: Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | ferday Apr 15, 2002 10:58 PM | | stay far away from the Giant...it is a great bike but the rear end flexes big time, especially if your a heavy rider who occasionally hucks. i'm 150lbs, i could feel the flex enough that i didn't get one. |
| What year Giant AC do you have? | Rev Bubba Apr 16, 2002 6:17 AM | | I understand they addressed the flexing problem in 2002. Are you still have the problem with a 2002 model? |
| What year Giant AC do you have? | Sci Teach Apr 17, 2002 2:45 PM | | I have not notice any such "flex" in my frame AT ALL! I go at 205 and have no idea what flex anyone is talking about. Try the bike out and see what you think. My AC Air is nothing but a good fitting fun ride..... |
| Which model i-drive are you abusing? | DeeEight Apr 16, 2002 10:35 AM | | Have you considered a Jamis Dakar Expert? Out of box its a heavy XC/Light freeride setup. |
| Which model i-drive are you abusing? | Swine Apr 16, 2002 12:17 PM | | Its the 4.0. But the parts i broke are the judy c(go figure), raceface cro-mo bb, and the spring on the vanilla. however i am also bottoming out the rear shock so more travel is needed.
dakar=not enough rear trav |
| No, bottoming out doesn't mean you need more travel... | DeeEight Apr 17, 2002 5:42 PM | | it means you need better travel, and a shock that's dialed for your weight. You're riding one of the bottom end I-drive's with parts NOT intended for anything more than light XC usage, and doing freeride stuff on it. No wonder you're breaking parts. You bought a relatively cheap duallie and are riding it beyond its designed role. |
| No, bottoming out doesn't mean you need more travel... | huck Apr 17, 2002 6:15 PM | | ahhh yes, i agree with you. but i did upgrade the rear spring to a 900#lb. but i think the raceface cro-mo bb can handle more THAN just xc. and it went before the rear shock went??? |
| im the same way! you need the 2001 Jamis Dakar Comp, read on | Beast Apr 16, 2002 8:41 PM | | 2001 Jamis Dakar Comp w/ many upgrades for sale!
price - $1200
17 inch frame - very nice bike, only ridden for 4 months with minimal usage. it has been upgraded to include a new rhino lite rim in the rear, a new fox vanilla r (you can also buy the stock fox float if you want), a new ritchey seat post, new Geax knobby tires and dh tubes, a water bottle cage, new sharkbite platfrom pedals (or new shimano clipless pedals w/ cages) , a new kore dh stem and new answer riser bars. it is yellow and blue, has 3 and a half inches of rear travel, and 3 to 5 inches in the front via pyslo xc; only has a few kniks in the paint, check out the spec sheet at the web site, I paid 1600 for it last year and have since added all of these brand new parts, its very nicely built!
this is such a good deal, thought id offer it to you before i release it to the public! The bike is very versitile and can be used for nearly anything.
Web site, take note, their specs are not as good as what i am selling! - http://jamisbikes.com/bikes/dakar_comp2001.html

| re: Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | guitarjeep Apr 17, 2002 8:40 PM | | How about the Marin Rock Springs?
Four to Six inches of rear travel and the swing arm is very stiff.
Also, it pedals exceptionally well, better than any full suspension I have ridden, even while standing.
If you want to spend more bucks, the Attack Trail (couple steps up the Marin ladder) comes with a fox float with lock out, which is good for XC but sturdy enough for freeride. |
| re: Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | Swine Apr 18, 2002 12:12 PM | | well, actually i would go for the wolfridge which i mentioned in my first post |
| re: Heavy XC/ light Freeride bike? | Incorrigible Apr 22, 2002 2:05 PM | | Well, I was on my Stinky (5" travel), for 5 hours straight during an urban ride the other day, jumping and hopping all over the place. It pedals better than my Kilauea, which is steel. I weigh 175 before eating... I can say that I love it. Your choice obviously, but it is worth checking out. Remember, your parts are going to bust anyways, so I wouldn't worry about the soso specs. Upgrading is half the fun! |
