| do i have to buy a road bike? | reznor99 Jul 31, 2002 12:51 PM | | I have a mountain bike (trek 6500), and just starting out in the sport, i am smitten. However, some of my friends are taking a tour of New England in the fall, and most of the group is gonna be on road/touring bikes. My question is will i be able to keep up with them on my MTB or would you recommend buying a road bike? Most of the tour, i believe, is on country roads (paved and some gravel), and i will be pulling a BOB trailer. I would really hate to buy a road bike cuz it isn't me, but I need to know if my current rig will make a sufficient tourer.

| Maybe, maybe not | BH Jul 31, 2002 2:21 PM | | How strong are you and is anyone else going to tow a trailer? Most likely a set of MTB slicks like the Tioga City slickers or the Ritchey Tom Slicks will help equalize you to the roadies. If you are a lot stronger/fitter then them then keep the knobbies. |

In fact, most people in the tour are first timers with just a few veterans thrown in the mix. And as far as I know, a couple of others are towing and the rest will be loaded with panniers. I figured towing would be the way to go cuz I can't load up my fork with panniers. I think I will get a set of slicks like suggested and give her a go! With any luck, we will get stuck on a rut-filled back road where they all will be suckin air!
Thanks! |

I'd get the touring/road bike if this is a long haul trip - they have more appropriate geometry and gearing for long days in the saddle.
If on the other hand you plan to do some trail riding, pack some folding knobbies and take the mtb.
Good luck and have a great trip. |
