| is it possible to get a NRS frame only? | bikerguydude Aug 1, 2002 8:51 AM | | hi, I have a stiff aluminum hardtail that kicks my ass. I was thinking about a Ti hardtail, but I might as well get a full susser for the trails around here. Anyway, how much would it cost to only buy a Giant NRS 3 frame? Does Giant sell the frame only?
Thanks
PS: I don't need the "long live Ti/hardtail/steel" posts. They may be correct, but not the info I need. |

| yes | derby Aug 1, 2002 9:50 AM | | Speedgoat.com ad in Dirt Rag magazine lists an NRS-2 frame-only for about $850.
I think the NRS would be an excellent frame for a transition from hardtail. Also it may be the most efficient full suspension XC racing design for all conditions. But most other FS designs ride smoother if you aren't in such a hurry on your rides :-) Although as a first FS bike it will feel plenty smooth!

| re: is it possible to get a NRS frame only? | EBG Aug 1, 2002 10:00 AM | | better yet, u can get the nrs air on the classifieds here for $795. brand new from a dealer. |
| When you look...bear in mind | Flyer Aug 1, 2002 10:38 AM | | The frame of the NRS AIR (high end) NRS 1, NRS 2, and NRS 3 (low end) are the same frame! If the frame comes with the rear shock, the difference will be that the AIR, 1, and 2 come with a SID that has a rebound adjusment, and the 3 does not. Also, I believe the 3 frame does not have the ability to add disc brakes, but I might be wrong about that. Other than that, they are identical frames other than the color. |
| The NRS 3 frame...... | MRfire - 1 Aug 1, 2002 11:47 AM | | DOES have disc brake mounts. The difference is it also has v-brake mounts where the others don't. I purchased a brand new NRS 3 frame on the classifieds here for $500. The person was actually trying to sell the whole bike where as I only needed the frame - so I talked him into tearing it down (except headset) and negotiated a price. Everything worked out great - I had my new frame four days later!
Watch though - they dent pretty easy. |
| Yes, Giant dealers can get them for about $850 | Rev Bubba Aug 1, 2002 10:43 AM | | There may be an availability problem this late in the season though. I'm sure Giant is geared up to produce 2003 by now and there may not be any frames around. Just a thought. Its pretty popular. |
| how much is the NRS3 complete bike? | bikerguydude Aug 1, 2002 7:19 PM | | hmmm... maybe i should just get the NRS3 bike if it is only slightly more.
thanks for the help |
| I got one.. | Adam Aug 1, 2002 9:31 PM | | and I paid $1500 canadian for the complete nrs3..and let me tell you, i LOVE that thing, it came with a judy XC (upgraded), lx/deore parts, and sweet mavic wheels that are disc ready ( adding discs in like 2 weeks) it weighs 27 Lbs ( which is pretty good for a fs in that price range). You'll probably end up paying $600 + for the NRS frame where you could get the complete bike for about 1000. And it has some great parts worth keeping, except the fork and crankset ( alivio :s ). The nrs3 frame alone only weighs 5.5 Lbs. |
| New NRS-1 Frame is $799.99 at www.frankfordbike.com... | Zag Aug 2, 2002 1:41 AM | | and it includes both disc and v-brake mounts. At least according to the web page:

| Got a digicam? Wanna use eBay? | næstep Aug 2, 2002 7:37 AM | | I bought a brand new, never ridden NRS2 for $1300. I took it home, completley disassembled it, and posted everything except the frame on eBay. Close up, detailed, well-lit photos and thorough text description (describing the components as they were new, never used take-off's from a parted-out frame) brought my cost for the frame down to a couple hundred.
If I would have held on to the headset and rear shock, I would have saved a bit more. Instead, I opted to buy a FSA headset (~$50) and a AD-12 shock (~$200), which were paid for by my eBay proceeds and are reflected in my final cost.
If you think your up for it, do a search of closed auctions for each of the components on eBay. You'll get a pretty good idea of what price you'll fetch for each. At the time (for a 2001 bike), the NRS2 was the value leader. The NRS3 had too many no-name components that wouldn't have sold as well on eBay, and the NRS1 retail price was too high compared to the resale value of its components. In any case, the NRS2 worked out to be the "value leader" for my resale purposes.
