| Bike shops in Taiwan | markh Aug 1, 2002 7:19 PM | | Does anyone know of any bike shops/factories in Taiwan where I could pick up a quality bike cheap as I'm heading over there soon. Was thinking of something like a Giant |

I think they are around in many cities along with the low-end commuter bikes which you see everywhere. As I remember, there were some really good deals on the Giants that were much cheaper then the USA prices. So if you are looking for giant you should have no problem. |
| Here's a few... | lkfoster Aug 2, 2002 7:48 AM | | You'll get the best prices on Giant. The models aren't exactly the same as in the States, but you can get some things there that you can't get here (i.e. hydro-formed downtube Giant logos that look like the Rockshox Duke forks, two-position NRS rear travels (XtC Team frameset is 20,000 ntd/$580 usd), and MCM Team carbon fiber hardtail framesets (21,000 ntd/$610 usd). You used to be able to get Specialized, but not so much in the past few years. I'd expect to pay about 60-75% of what things cost in the States.
If you interests lay with roadie stuff, you can get the new Giant carbon fiber ONCE road frameset for around $45,000ntd/$1,300 usd.
My favorite shop is in Tainan, about an hour North of Kaoshiung. The owner is Cowboy and he speaks pretty decent English. Shop phone number is 06 228 0089. He's located on the South end of downtown just North of the new Landis hotel. He can put together just about any combination of parts for you, none of this "we'll give you 50% of retail value credit if you want to swap anything..." that State-side shops like to do. Tell him Larry sent you.
In Hsinchu the shop owner is Jackie Chen and his shop number is 03 522 2355. He speaks good English also and is used to dealing with ex-pats. His shop is downtown on Hsi Da Road.
I don't know the owner's name in shop in Taipei, but the number is 02 2545 1651. He also speaks good English. The shop is less than 1 km from the local airport.
I never found any decent shops in Kaoshiung.
I've brought three or four bikes back in through customs and have never been asked about any of them. Just ride it a bit over there to get it dirty. |
