Is steel real?(9 posts)

Is steel real?steel

Is steel real? My previously owned bikes are all steel frames from Kona and Norco. i have no direct experiences with other materials. I want to hear some voices on Alu and Ti hardtail frame.

My steel frames are Cromoly4130, not fancy Reynold or True Temper OX.

thanks

How much does the steel frame weigh?Rusty

I have heard of some lighter weight steel frames , however, I have not heard of a steel mtb frame weighing less than 3.5 lbs. Some aluminum and Ti frames are available in the two-pound range. Steel does have a more resilient feel than most aluminum frames, however, resilience is not as important of a factor when considering full suspension MTB's. Steel should be more of a consideration when purchasing a hardtail rather than when purchasing a full suspension MTB.

After going through two cheap and heavy steel bikes, I began to consider aluminum when looking for my new steed. One ride on my buddies alum rig over our typical trail covered with rocks and ledges made me decide to stick with steel...Why? The aluminum jarred my legs much more than steel which I did not like at all. Another reason...there's steel bikes out there that are lighter than aluminum bikes.

I got an AL and steel hardtails. Which one's my favorite? The steel one of course. Way more forgiving over the rough stuff and is keeping me from getting a full susser since I enjoy riding it so much...

My new road bike is going to be reynolds 853 and i can't wait. steel is a beautiful thing and I love the ride as much as my Ti hardtail. Just to throw this out there and spread this bike sale as far as possible I'm selling a Ti Mongoose. Full XT with Rolf Dolomites and avid front/deore rear brakes with SD 1.9 levers. It's a beautiful bike, there's a post on the Best Deals page and it's listed on e-bay and in the classifieds here at consumer review.

Needless to say even if you don't even look at my bike i'd have to say that steel and ti are head and shoulders above al, keeping in mind that I haven't ridden Cannondale's new CAAD7 yet. It's supposed to be the best thing to happen to al in a long time.

Steel is real.

Especially BMX cromoly 4130 tubes. Man that is thick and strong stuff and gives an awsome ride.

I have ridden alu hardtails and never liked them. It's not an imperical fact, just merely my opinion for my riding conditions.

I road a thin tubed steel Breezer Lightning and the ride was still very supple and forgiving.

My pick would be a high quality steel frame for a hardtail. But if your are going full suspension then go with the light weight alumium.

My current ride is a Trek 930 with a True Temper OX II frame and it has a nice feel to it over rough trail. It also has survived large drops of 4 feet many times.
