Giant NRS,Build Kits, best way to go? (3 posts)
| Giant NRS,Build Kits, best way to go? | Sca Aug 4, 2002 12:07 PM | | I've been riding a 21" Trek Hardtail (32 lbs.)as a beginners bike for 1 1/2 years. I'm looking to buy a F/S bike that rides like a hard tail. I do almost only xc about 3 times a week. I'm 6'5" 185 lbs w/ a 35" inseam and feel my skill leave is high intermidiate. I'm spent ALOT of time trying to narrow down my options to fit me and I feel the Giant NRS frame (NRS2 OR Air Colors)w/ a build kit is what I'm leaning towards. Trying to stay under $2000. I can wait a couple of months for 2002 closeouts to save money. I'd Love a Ellsworth Truth but inpratical ($$$$ for skill leave) and the Specialized Epic(demo name) is to costly, unproven as of yet. GT I-DRIVE is nice but I come off the seat to much to utilize it's strong points.
Looking at a complete Giant NRS 1 (prefer NRS 2 COLORS ), theres to many components I don't need or would switchout. I'd like a bike thats weighs roughly 25lbs. I don't need Disc brakes (weight, RARELY get muddy or wet (live mid east coast) however would like disc on rear if possible(XTR V brake on front). Don't need Clipless pedals (medical reason), I Get to many flats for tubeless tires (type of terrain), would like to at least have XT, Race Face, Scram or equivalent parts (derailers, crank, chain, hubs, etc.)I want reliable parts, especially derailers. My Trek has Deiore and LX parts which are not good enough for my skill ability.
I was thinking of buying a NRS frame and ordering a build kit from Jenson, pricepoint or someone (any comments welcome on best parts for my price range or places to shop). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd definitely suggest you reevaluate your thinking on the disc brakes. I ride exclusively XC, and began using a front-only Avid disc in the summer of 2000. Easily one of the all-time top upgrades in my book, even though I ride in mostly dry Northern California. I was going to go with the same setup on my NRS, but got talked into a rear disc by Sparti on the brake board.
In any case, I think you'd be wasting your time with a rear-only disc (as opposed to front-only). I've seen some partially-convincing arguments for a rear-only disc for downhillers, but none yet for the XC crowd.
If you're weight conscious, Hope, Formula and Magura have some brakes you'll be interested in.

I noticed you said you live on the Mid-East Coast, I live on Long Island and I go to a great LBS that carries Giants and offers some great pricing. I recently purchased a leftover 2001 Rainier for $450 (that's about $200-$250) below the next best price I found. I was in there recently and I saw a couple of NRS's, not sure which models (1, 2 or 3's). I would recommend that you give this shop a call, I suspect that they will be able to give you some really good prices. The name of the shop is the Bike Depot East (in East Islip which is in Suffolk County) and it is run by a real nice guy named Brian, he is very helpful and is happy to answer questions. They can be reached at (631) 581-5557.
