| Play in shock mount on Titus Racer X? | KMan Aug 5, 2002 11:21 AM | | I just noticed a small amount of play (1-2mm)where the shock mounts to the frame top tube (2001 model). I assume this is normal since the shock need to pivot at this location. I never noticed it before and it seems to me that this play allows for much more rear wheel flex in the frame. Does the new 2002 frames do this as well or is some of the flex eliminated? |
| Shouldn't have play | TravisAtTitus Aug 5, 2002 11:47 AM | | Kman,
The play shouldn't be happening on your frame. It sounds like your shocks DU bushing is worn. Give then a call and they should be able to service your shock and eliminate the play. Give us a call. 180085Titus.

remove the shock.
pull the metal (aluminum?) spacers out of the bushing where the shcok connects to the top tube.
file the aluminum spacers down a little bit where they meet inside the bushing.
reinstall the spacers, reinstall the shock. and tighten it down.
play eliminated. rear end tight again (if you know what I'm sayin'). |
| NO!!! | Metroid Aug 6, 2002 7:54 AM | | Removing metal from the reducers will only increase the play. They need to be replaced along with the DU bushings. The reducers are about $2.50 and the DU bushing is about $2 from Fox (although they will probably gouge you on the shipping). |
| NO!!! | phreak Aug 6, 2002 10:10 AM | | the problem is this:
the du bushing has shrunk or worn out side to side...
the reducers are actually now able to slide back and forth w/in the du bushing. this is allowing the side to side play kman and others have/are experiencing.
sure, call up fox to get the parts replaced, or pull the reducers out of the bushing, and lightly file them down (just where they contact each other inside the du bushing, and only file them down just enough so that they don't touch each other w/in the du bushing)). Toss the reducers back in the du busing, and tighten down the pivot bolt.
it's the rider's choice, wait 2 weeks for delivery and spend some $$$, or take 10 minutes and just get it done.
I had the EXACT same issue as kman, (I've got an all black ano 2001 RX), and since doing the above, it's been rock solid. |
| HMM NO!!! | TravisAtTitus Aug 6, 2002 3:27 PM | | Phreak,
Most of what you say is true about fixing the issue but that fix will cause bigger issues later on. When you file down the bushings you get a little gap between them resulting in increase stresses on the bolt holding the shock to the frame. One or two good hard hits will cause the bolt to fail and damage the frame by bending the shock tabs. I have seen it happen to a couple of frames and they used the same fix. Its hard to warrenty a frame when you didn't take the time or money to maintain it. Its like changing the oil in your car, you don't change it, your engine will blow up. Spend the money and keep on riding.
Thanks,
