| Giant NSR vs a few Treks vs Canandale V500 | yosshimura Aug 6, 2002 4:30 AM | | I saw a few bikes yesterday and my head is just spinning...
Trek Fuel 90 $1329 - I like b/c it has XT/LX components
Trek Fuel 80 $949 - I like bc it is under $1K, but components suck and I think the reviews I read on here its not worth it....
Trek Y Glide - $1099 - I didn't see a review on it, looks good though and components suck. Price is attractive.
Trek VRX200 - $1029 - Same comments as the Y Glide
Giant NSR 2 - $1329 - Great components, but a Taiwan frame. I think I rather spend the money on the Fuel 90 if I go to spend >$1K.
What do you guys think? What's up with the Y Glide and VRX200?
thanks |
| I forgot the V500 | yosshimura Aug 6, 2002 4:33 AM | | The Canondale V500 I liked b/c it was $1020 or so, and had a couple decent components (but would have to upgrade some) and has a nice frame.....but the reviews I read sucked :( why? |
| Figure what type of riding you do | Ben S. Aug 6, 2002 6:08 AM | | You should first think about what type of riding you do, and what type of bike you want. You listed several "hardtail-like" bikes and several do-it-all bikes. If you race, you'll probably want one of the Trek Fuels or the Giant NRS. I have owned a Super V 500 for a couple of years. This is a great all-around trail bike. It's not the lightest bike and not the most current suspension design, but it is a solid bike. As far as the components, you would need to make a few upgrades, mainly the brakes and levers, and add clipless pedals. Other than that, you can replace parts as they wear out. The Super V 500 is a solid, low maintenance bike that can tackle all types of terrain moderately well. |
| No racing | yosshimura Aug 6, 2002 6:33 AM | | No racing, just trail riding, some kinda technical, a little downhill (if you can call that for Marcam Park and Oleata in South FLorida). A couple of those did fit the description of downhill as described to me on here a few days ago. |
| re: Giant NSR vs a few Treks vs Canandale V500 | WarrGuru Aug 9, 2002 1:23 PM | | The Trek VRX series was discontinued in 2000, I believe. It's a fairly heavy frame with up to 5" of travel. It's more of a trail bike than an XC bike. Has a moderate amount of pedal induced bobbing.
The only Y bikes that Trek currently makes are the Y26 and Y24 (kid's bike). I never heard of the Y Glide. It's a very cheap bike that is not in the same class as the other bikes here.
The Fuel 90 is a good bike for the price.
The Fuel 80, like you said, has very cheap components.
Giant NRS is a good bike for the price.
You didn't mention any specifics like the type of riding you will do, your height and weight, and your riding experience. All that is necessary for us to give you any more help. |
